Balrog is a producer and DJ from Leeds (UK), who has supplanted himself in the darker and grittier side of industrial techno with a focus on heavy groove-ridden drums, driving bass, and distorted vocals. His tracks and DJ mixes look back to the classic hard and grooving techno of the early 2000's, but with a fresh injection of modern industrial power.

Balrog has gone from strength to strength over the last few years playing at events such as Jaded and releasing on labels including Moments In Time, The Meaning of Rave, COUP, Green Fetish, Taro, and Gobsmacked. These releases and many unreleased tracks have received support from some of the biggest in the scene including Amelie Lens, Dax J, Rebekah, Paula Temple, Manni Dee, Tham, and many more.

2021 is set to be a huge year for Balrog with forthcoming releases on Soma, Green Fetish, Etruria, and Instruments of Discipline. 

Balrog also runs his own record label, Khazad Records, which releases music from the very best industrial and hard techno talent around.

For this mix I was inspired by a scene in a popular Tamil movie, Padayyappa. The scene describes a relationship between a drummer and a dancer. The backstory is that the dancer is one-sidedly pursuing a romance with the drummer. In the scene, the dancer is expected to keep time to the drumbeat, and the drummer mischievously throws unexpected and complex rhythms to overwhelm the dancer.

Eleni and I wanted to mirror the relationship described in the scene. Eleni is a contemporary dancer and performance artist based in Berlin. Tracks were selected to inspire dance improvisation for Eleni, but retaining the mischevious spirit of the project and giving you unexpected and complex rhythms to work with.   Moody, textural and propulsive, keep an eye out for dance performances by Eleni, @artemesia_effendi. 002: Dancer's Dilemma

As we all know, there really is no shortage of artists in the vast field of electronic music, especially in the German capitol of Techno that is Berlin. They come and go with trends and seasons, build their hypes, and eventually vanish into the social medial void our postmodern times have created. However, there are those ones which stand out, which stay stuck in the eyes and ears of the public, which play and produce themselves in the collective memory of our community. Tham is one of those. As resident and face of underground public favourites like SYNOID, Revier Südost, and Lebendig, in just a few years the young artist has proven that he’s one to stay, to watch and to listen to. Growing up on the dancefloors of Berlin – figuratively speaking – Tham’s artistic vision hails from and is always directed back to that very place which represents the crux of the matter of our entire subculture. His interpretation of Techno, his musical vision, lives on his drive to set people in motion. Pounding bass drums, complex grooves, and aggressive synth lines lashing through the crowd, taking their hypnotic effect. This is what Tham provides. Music ex machina, coming out of nowhere, binding the eyes, ears, and bodies of his audience to the floor, to the very present, sticking to their brains, billowing through their minds for hours, long after they’ve left the club.

Tailgating SPFDJ is no easy task. Her sharp ascent is born of a taste for dynamics that approach and bank with ecstatic momentum. Occasionally working at vicious speeds, acidic techno climes are funnelled through kaleidoscopic wares from the wealth of high-energy outposts found across dance music today.

Hailing originally from Sweden, SPFDJ's beginnings were in London as part of the infamous collective Universe of Tang, an ongoing club operation steeped in DIY means and mystifying aesthetics. Then a relocation to Berlin prompted a new chapter of projects and activity, and the chance to import her affiliations. With sprintf, she runs the Cranial Handles radio transmission as well as the System.out sound system. Power Play is the latest party coerced
into life by SPFDJ, sprintf, and others. And now drawing on the many and varied collaborative efforts at the heart of her activity, SPFDJ delivers Intrepid Skin, her label and outlet for autonomous developments in techno's milieu.

Not many DJs can claim to experience as meteoric, grassroots ascent as SPFDJ. Having established a remarkable energy, style and attitude on the underground techno circuits of both London and Berlin, she is known for inspiring debauchery and sweat-soaked hedonism on an international scale. Typically operating at a blisteringly high-tempo, an SPFDJ trip takes no prisoners in it’s exploration of strains of techno, acid, EBM, hardcore and trance. It’s a style that Ben UFO called “utterly ruthless”, and one that more and more clubbers are submitting to; a gleefully chaotic two-fingers to dance music’s self-serious establishment.

Nene H has been hailed as one of techno's most strikingly singular artists. In the studio she mixes up her passion for folk and religious music as well as bruising club sounds with layers of spirituality, found sound and analogue aesthetics. Despite only first getting involved in the scene in 2015, she is already at home at places like Berlin Atonal, either playing live or laying down a DJ set, and also has a masters in piano.

As a DJ she can often sound quite different to how she does in the studio: her mix here is hyperactive affair that will well and truly kick start your 2020 with brutal drum patterns and twisted electronics that take no prisoners. There's also distorted techno rap and malfunctioning club music tightly woven together in a light speed mix that somehow packs all this and more into just one hour.
