Beat submission for EHBB5 (https://www.elektronauts.com/t/elektronauts-hiphop-beat-battle-5-less-is-more-edition) which is hardly groundbreaking or my best anything but god, I've not made music in so long, and it got me off my arse and into making the sort of beat-tape stuff I was listening to in the early 2000s.

At home with parents for the weekend, so no instruments bar a laptop - and so I took a "beatmaking" approach to this. As a teenager, I'd have hoped my output sounded something like this; now, it feels simplistic, but I like the coherency, and speaking to a particular time of "what could you do with just an MPC". I programmed most of it on a qwerty keyboard. When I came home, I finished the arrangement and did some mixing on some real speakers and with my Push. (I'd thought about going full "The Field" with this, but downtempo comes more naturally to me).

All the sounds in the track are solely from the three original tracks. Piano sample is, obviously, Pepper Jelly - but so is the bass and pad, pushed through granulators and a few other effects. The "drums" are HNY, bar the "hats", which come from Autista 3.

Hexhead (disquiet0233)

A synthesizer loop emerges from a drone; a bass part and Rhodes join it before the track ends.

The drone *is* the synthesizer loop: sequenced from a computer, a lead line in the modular synthesizer (filtered and modulated) is frozen inside a Mutable Instruments Clouds. Clouds has a broad _texture_ setting, and the start point of the loop is shifted back and forth very slowly, as does the density of grains being sown. 

As the track goes on, the dry signal is blended in, until the very end, when only the dry reverberated sound is left; the reverb is dialled back just as the track concludes.

A quick sketch, really, but interesting enough to keep and upload: wrapping my head around using Clouds' freeze functionality alongside other sound; careful compression of the frozen tone brought it up to the volume of the original line.

A live take of a modular patch from this afternoon.

Pad is Braids SawX3 chord into Humpback, with a slewed sample and hold into CV1 of the Humpback, and noise into CV2, into MTM Reverb.
Lead is Tides, modulated by Peaks, sequenced by SQ1 and manipulated by hand; delay is Disting tape delay.
Bass is Rings in 2op FM mode, envelope striking Brightness, sloth shaping Position, sequenced by SQ1, into Clouds verb.

Rough, but ready.

Zwischendenjahren

A first try at integrating modular and piano. The heart of the patch is a melody from Meadowphysics being picked out on a pair of analogue oscillators; lots of other things are going on too. Over time, I modify the modular patch, and then return to the piano. I conceived the setup on a thick snow day; it took a while to get around to setting it up and spending some time with it.

Not super-telechir-y, but worth adding to the pile of things. Some Rhodes shredding, some mixing I'm reasonably happy with. Something on the deep spectrum, I guess. Not a genre I really work in, but I enjoyed playing around.

Sound collage for a fading movie theatre when the doors are shut. 

Built from a single scene in The Last Picture Show_; first, run through _mangl_ on norns to lay down a base tape; then, overdubbed with the same sample loaded into _cheat codes_, to build more texture. mastered, processed, uploaded.
