For those unaware of the concept of the Round Up: Each artist that released on Heist in 2020 gets to remix another artist from that year. This year, there's the feel-good festival vibes on Crackazat remix of ‘Dakar Disco’ and the rolling tech goodness of Kassian’s remix of Nebraska’s bonkers track ‘Dip & Flip’. Pitto takes an excursion into deep dubbed out house with his remix of Kassian’s ‘8th Movement’ and Nebraska goes for a UK house meets US garage meets Christopher Walken’s cowbell solo on his remix of ‘Move out the way’ by Dam Swindle. The label heads take on their house stabs with their atmospheric and pumping remix of Teleseen’s ‘Dekalb’, while the latter goes for a worldly approach with his remix of ‘Discko’ by Pitto. There’s also the superb Detroit house approach from Scan 7 with their remix of Crackazat’s ‘Class one’, and we hear Alma Negra adding some vocal and synth layers to the gospel house of Scan7’s killer track ‘All for me’.

Tune Of A Taxi Driver

On the new four-song EP Mandrake, Cyr mixes influences from Latin, Arabic and African music, alongside elements of house, ragga, electro-dub, along with the more experimental atmospheres of his previous work. The new EP is surprisingly diverse in spite of its short runtime; the title track twists the horn melodies of Morgan Price from Ikekebe Shakedown around a sweaty, stacked up-tempo rhythm that recalls both the locked-in rhythms of New York disco and freestyle with the looser elements of Ethio-jazz and afrobeat. 'The Real Enemy' delves deep into dub darkness, floating cut-up female vocals against at skittering 150-bpm drum machine pattern that finds its inspiration equally from darbouka drumming as from jungle and break-core. The B-side heads in a more dancefloor-friendly direction with 'The Goldest Coast' opening up a truncated four-to-the-floor groove to interference from riotous percussion elements alongside a chorus of birds recorded deep in a rainforest on the Caribbean island of Tobago. The closing track is a rough raga riddim at its core; the calls of bullfrogs rub shoulders with electronic percussion elements, draped with talk box wails." Music For Insomniacs

Tommy Mandel - I. Alpha (Flutes) (ICE 017)

@teleseen: "This mix focuses on the techno that was coming out of NYC and the surrounding areas in the late 90s and early 2000s, when I first moved there. The kind of stuff you used to be able to find at Dance Tracks on 3rd St in the East Village when it was still there and you can still find in bargain bins in shops all over town. This sound is a bit overlooked and overshadowed by the foundational stuff from Detroit and Berlin but it was equally important in its day and continues to influence producers around the world. The New York sound was unique in the fact that it drew equal influence in places from hip hop, freestyle, and Caribbean music, but also from punk, hardcore, and industrial. There's a signature deepness to a lot of these tracks as well, which is contrasted against a certain austere harshness that was reflected in the city's landscape at the time. This sound was what I first encountered when I began exploring electronic music and it continues to influence my work."

MIMS Guest Mix: TELESEEN (New York, Goldmin Music)

Over the years, the sonic world of Heist has grown into a place where energetic house, live instruments and worldly electronics move together in the most natural way.  Heist are very proud that they can showcase artists that cross boundaries or simply create their own universe, while keeping a strong connection with the identity of the label.
 
The ‘Exposures EP’ by Teleseen, fits perfectly into this aesthetic.  Teleseen is the main project of nomadic DJ, producer and multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Cyr, drawing influences from deep house, afro house, samba, batucada as well as the experimentalism and sound system cultures of his home town NYC.  His sound leans heavily on polyrhythmic programming and he’s nothing short of a synth wizard.  This release is comprised of three originals, and a remix by Berlin based Italian house guru Black Loops.  The record features a number of collaborators and recordings of various instruments, ranging from percussive sections to synths and guitar. This live approach to electronic music is one that is deeply rooted into Gabriel’s work. His upcoming release on Soundway as ‘Thaba’ is another good example of this approach and also shows how diverse his sounds really is. 
 
The title track ‘Exposures’ is a thrilling synth affair with tribal-like chants running through a vocoder. The combination of handclaps, crunchy synths and steady drums make for a thrilling afro house cut that hints towards early motor city electronics.  Black Loops is known for his deep grooves and built his fame with his releases on Freerange, Pets and Shall not Fade.  His take on ‘Exposures’ sees him up the tempo to a pacey 130 bpm, where an introvert vibe of reverbed hits and bleeps take you into full dream mode. He expertly chops up the original into a contemporary track that fits somewhere between high tempo tech-house and minimalistic deep house. 
 
On the flip we get to hear more of the sonic world Teleseen has to offer.  ‘Dekalb’ seems impossible to box into a genre.  Its mood is set by a lovely section of free-flowing Rhodes chords and the chopped vocals and open synth- bass gives the track a whole new feel.  It’s that ballsy electronic edge combined with dreamy textures and live rhythms that give ‘Dekalb’ its unique vibe.  Closer ‘Transfer’ takes us down to a mid-tempo percussive workout with a Balearic twist. The steady electronic groove and the free flowing guitar take you to yet another corner of Teleseen’s beautifully crafted universe.
