The project was born out of a shared love for the Saz and the traditional music of Anatolia: the music of the aşık, troubadour poets who express the emotions of the people be it love or revolt, the music of the Alevi for whom the Saz is sacred, the plaintive calls in free rhythm known as uzun hava and the folk dances.  
As an ensemble of four female musicians Telli Turnalar offers a unique angle of female interpretation of the rich Anatolian repertoire in its cultural and linguistic diversity (singing in Turkish, Kurdish, Zaza, Armenian, Laz language etc.), which is a reflection of the artistic biographies of each one of them. 
Their strong and high-pitched voices follow the footsteps of the aşıks, expressing themselves fearlessly. They vibrate together with the strings of their instruments to express the ancient poems. Each voice in its particular color leads a song or joins in with the others in subtle polyphonic arrangements accompanied by the Saz (Anatolian lute), percussion and the hurdy-gurdy, a European instrument producing a sound reminiscent of the life in the mountains of Anatolia or the plains of Mesopotamia. Sometimes the voices join in unison to bring the meaning and the emotions to a musical climax.
Telli Turnalar are trying to make the voices of women to be more present, as they are unfortunately often silenced. The suffering of women can be heard in several songs of their repertoire. They also take on spiritual music of the different confessions present in Anatolia by interpreting great mystical poets such as Yunus Emre (13th Century), Pir Sultan Abdal (15th Century), Dedemoglu (17th/18th Century) and contemporary poets such as Davut Sulari or Kul Ahmet (20th Century). 
The group is composed of two European musicians who have spent time in Turkey and two musicians of Anatolian origin of grew up in France. This special constellation allows that their common musical search is characterized by openness, spontaneity and generosity.
