Outside Magazine has honored her as one of the most adventurous women in the world of sports. And recently Hilaree Nelson was named captain of The North Face global athletes team. A seasoned adventurer with more than 40 expeditions to some of the most remote corners of the globe, her passion and dedication to climbing and skiing also won Nelson recognition as a 2018 National Geographic Adventurer of the Year. 

Nelson has become a mentor for an upcoming generation of mountain athletes. As a member of Protect Our Winters Riders' Alliance and an advocate of our wild places, she shares her stories and life experiences with them. 

She is the first woman to climb two 8000 meter peaks, Everest and its neighboring peak Lhotse(Loht-say), in a single 24-hour period.

Born and raised in the Northwest, Hilaree Nelson began skiing at age three in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. Today, her favorite mountain town is Telluride, CO.

Born in Syracuse to a middle-class Italian family, John Pavlovitz grew up Catholic. He described himself as a mainstream suburban childhood, raised with a sense of "in groups" and "out groups"—those who were blessed by the Almighty, and those who were not.
Pavlovitz today is a Wake Forest resident, minister at North Raleigh Community Church, and father of two. He is also the writer and activist behind “Stuff that Needs to be Said,” a blog that calls out hypocrisy in plain language, with the president and his ardent followers in the Religious Right earning particular scorn. Over the past year, 23 million people viewed the blog, and he has over 60,000 Twitter followers. Pavlovitz’s words have been featured in Slate, Cosmopolitan, and Quartz.
Now a 22-year veteran in the trenches of local church ministry and a clear leader of the Religious Left, Pavlovitz is committed to equality, diversity, and justice—both inside and outside faith communities.

Ross Kauffman, Oscar - Winning Documentary Filmmaker

Born and raised in Fairbanks Alaska and now living in So California, Nelson Parrish finds inspiration in both the rugged elements of his native home and in his current surroundings. Drawn directly from his experiences as a hard core skier, racer and surfer—all ways to shift through landscapes at high speeds—the artist translates the blur of movement into brilliant flashes of color which he appropriately entitles racing stripes.

In his work fashioned from thickly layering clear and semi-translucent resin, fiberglass and intense band of pigment onto planks of boldly grained native woods in suspended positions above, adjoining and against one another, Parrish says he is all about provoking a desire in his viewers to plumb the depths, seeking out and discerning the synthetic from the natural.

The Shinto ritual of misogi plays a role in this 21st century variation on the them of action painter, with action writ large.

Matt Maxwell is Texas native who discovered a passion for photography in the dark room of his high school, and after pursuing photography in college, moved to Los Angeles with his wife to work in the entertainment industry. 

Maxwell Filmworks is his production company based in West Texas – with Hollywood roots.
 Matt Maxwell is no newbie to Telluride. In 2017, he became Mountainfilm’s very first Emerging Filmmaker Fellow. The initiative is another way for Mountainfilm to support the filmmakers whose work is foundational for the festival.

Matt returns to Telluride 2 years after that honor with his latest project: Finding Home in Boomtown.

Ben Rhodes is scheduled to appear at the 41st annual Mountainfilm over Memorial Weekend in Telluride. His talk will revolve around his latest book, “The World As It Is,” a memoir of his Obama years, with commentary about the White House and the world today.

Jose Gonzalez, founder/director emeritus of Latino Outdoors, is working today to ensure everyone, regardless of race or socioeconomic status, has access to outdoor adventures so that the demographics of the outdoor recreation community wind up reflecting the demographics that make up a shifting American population, to whit, on or around 2042, most of the population of the US will be non-white.

Gonzalez is part of panel at Mountainfilm in Telluride on pathways toward inclusion and access in outdoor recreation, to be moderated by James Edward Mills, an African-American journalist who has worked in the outdoor industry for 30 years.
