Awarded the title of DJ Mag’s ‘Breakthrough DJ’ in 2013, Citizenn has won favour across multiple disciplines for his retro-futurist style. A film director in a former life, his affinity with working with technology led him to this first album, inspired by the direction it was taking humanity.
 
“I wanted to explore this idea of humanity infusing with technology, we have become completely dependent upon it to survive,’ explains Laurence AKA Citizenn, ‘The western world's obsession with augmenting our natural abilities runs deeper than moving things quickly or getting us into space, it allows us to manifest complex ideas and emotions in an artistic context. Each track on the record is based on a particular theme of human emotion or technological/mechanical attribute, and it's relation to the world of electronic music. I've dug deep to conceptualise each track to this format and attempted to create a journey through my influences, both musical and cinematically.”
 
The title track cracks the album into a dystopian tone, before tracks like ‘Infatuation’, ‘Control’ and ‘Gone’ welcome in warmth with R&B-tinted smooth vocals, layered over textured beats that sit safe with artists such as Scuba and James Blake. As the record progresses, Citizenn’s recognisable sci-fi house synths and effortlessly approachable classic beats surface in first single, ‘Tied’, and tracks including ‘Lacefront’ and ‘Shutters’ take a bow to the ground-breaking sounds of the late eighties and early nineties. 
 
Honest and rapid moments allude to a future vision in ‘Oh Bongdage’ and ‘You Are’ as the record edges forward to its conclusion, whilst vocal slices delivering subliminal messages are a constant throughout. “Aisha has one of the most amazing thinking minds I know. She and I came up with multiple scenarios and ways of expressing them through her vocal contributions. I also worked with a vocalist called Py, another great mind and voice who is instantly cinematic and can evoke so many different feelings with her tones.” 
 
Starting his musical life as a drummer, Laurence Blake’s Citizen alias didn’t come into play until after a successful career in video directing, working with the likes of Aluna George and Little Boots. “With film and the visual arts I was able to present impossible scenarios and environments, narrative-led or pop-culture heavy responses to subject matter. The music, which came later has allowed me to go one step further than I ever was able to with film.”
 
The whole record is visual, creating a vivid landscape that only an artist familiar with the details of more than one creative medium could deliver, with themes and textures that use both digital and analogue synthesis, and human oral and physical input. “The first versions of the record almost had no gaps or pauses at all, like some kind of blackish grey tapestry. Over the course of this path I began to understand the music I was making more, where these ideas were coming from and how I was applying it to the original concept and learned that nothing in life is linear/binary, even technology deviates from it's programmed functionality.” 
 
“It's been an affirming process and I have grown and allowed myself to be truly personal with the machines I use. In essence: the original concept of the record has become a self-fulfilling journey of self awareness and ownership.”

A strong 2015 for Idle Hands so far has featured that fine Strategy album and label debuts for a resurgent I.A. Bericochea and Until My Heart Stops man Leif, whose Life Through Analogies 12" is due imminently. News now arrives of the Bristol label's 30th release which sees the arrival of a new face on Idle Hands in the shape of Matt Karmil, a Salisbury-born DJ, producer, and studio engineer who settled in German city Cologne back in 2012 and has since steadily emerged as an artist of some promise. Last year saw Karmil debut on Beats In Space, remix John Talabot and Axel Boman's Talaboman project and feature prominently on Jens Uwe Beyer's PNN label, not least the fiendishly titled debut album ----.

Next month sees Karmil add Idle Hands to his small but respectable discography with the three-track 12" Play It, whose titles play out like a riff on the Daft Punk classic "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger". Described as a trio of "hooky leftfield house constructions" by Idle Hands, we have the first public stream on scratchy opening track "Play It". This record looks to be the start of something special between artist and label with Idle Hands confirming they plan to issue Karmil's second album later this year.

Upon return from a recent trip to the deepest of crates in Colombia, Cut Chemist and Beats of All-Nations sought out to remix a unique set of dusty records, each different from the last, with an equally diverse list of producers. Going Back to Cali: Cut Chemist’s Colombian Crates Remixed is MORE THAN CUMBIA, its a reflection on a tropical culture rich in spirit, creativity and passion strung together with field recordings found along the way. These records were bought in Cali, Colombia during Patronio Alvarez Festival last year, hence the name. 

Our trip begins with folklore Colombiano favorites Los Corraleros de Majagual over a crunchy boom-bap by Co. Fee from Los Angeles’ beat collective, My Hollow Drum. Dance Kill Move (Stockholm, Sweden) adds some serious low end to Los Jovenes de Hierro’s classic charanga, “Ritmo Sabroso.” Ubiquity recording artist, currently residing in Colobmia, Bosq and Yukicito of La Junta (Los Angeles) contribute absolute party starters, while El Dusty’s “Mi Chola” give Los Teen Agers a taste Corpus Christi, TX. Atropolis (Queens) pays homage with a heavy stripped down edit of Julio y su Combo’s “Lamento Cumbiambero” and Los Chicos Altos (Barcelona) add in some rub-a-dub flavor on Los Hermanos Tuiran’s “Lluvia.” In addition we explore national treasures and the lesser known, new styles of chirimía, porro, pachanga, salsa and cumbia as interpreted by Sumohair (Los Angeles), Gabe Real (Pomona CA) and Greece duo SUPERSAN (aka Panama Cardoon & Mister Kentro).

Just Jack Recordings lines up a limited edition white label vinyl release from an unknown artists titled ‘Blessed Are The Meek’, delivering the essence of Chicago with a raw and heavy house anthem.

As the Bristol based imprint continues to carve out its place in the underground, releases from the likes of Mr. G, Dana Ruh and Beesmunt Soundsystem have showcased its carefully curated output over the past few years. Now a new vinyl release, limited to 303 copies, adds to its acclaimed catalogue.  

With an infectious, old-school synth melody at its core, ‘Blessed Are The Meek’ is an instant classic. A steady bass line lays the foundation while a jacking beat and a big diva vocal amps up the energy. Simply put, it’s pure fire for the dancefloor.

All the serious discoheadz out there probably already know dutch collector & insane dj Loud E. He delivered legendary mixes for the sake of defunct webradio CBS, now Intergalactic FM, and a tons of edits on Big Bear, Salamanca, AM, Magick Kuts or Ambassador Reception. The latter label run by Steve Kotey, released in 2008 a whole album of edits aptly named "Loudefied". Almost ten years later, Berceuse Heroique through its Brasserie Heroique edit series, make a reissue of some of the best ones from the album. Here is our fave "Granada Nights" and oh yes we do love Granada, its senoritas, its Alhambra and those hazy flamenco nights !
