Alright so before we ask the real questions, where are you from? Any other scene duties other than producing and djing?

MOPÉ:
I'm from Bellingham, WA, a college town north of Seattle. There's an amazing music scene here that I'm so blessed to be apart of. I've done a little bit of show curating with a crew I DJ with further south, as well as a little bit of sound work.

What does the Washington scene have that's exclusive to WA? Whats a Washington staple in the edm realm.

MOPÉ:
I think it's the community aspect that I've had a hard time finding outside of Washington. The whole music scene feels like a family, and it runs so deep.A staple would have to be the producers that come from here. First group that comes to mind is Odesza. They've gotta be one of my biggest inspirations, and they came from right here in Bellingham.

Can you pinpoint the moment you said "This is what im going to do?"

MOPÉ: 
I think in general, I've always known that music is what I've wanted to do, and it started with my first guitar I got back in middle school. When it comes to producing, it was the moment I made my first beat in Ableton. I had bought a Focusrite Scarlet that came with Ableton Lite, and I just remember the moment I got my hands on it something just clicked in my head, where I knew I could spend hours in that DAW and get all the noise and ideas I heard in my head out into the world. From then on it's just been an all consuming part of my life that I would never change.

When you started trying to play out what type adversity did you face and how did you overcome it? And in hindsight was there an easier way?

MOPÉ:
Really the hardest part was just figuring out how to exactly get the gigs. The DJ scene, especially in EDM, can feel daunting at times. Knowing who to talk to, where to go or who to email can feel like such a confusing thing to navigate at first. I think in hindsight, and what I'd suggest to other DJ's is to just get out and network. Go to shows at the clubs you wanna play, and don't be afraid to just email or message anyone and see what's available.

Who do you feel are the unsung heroes of your local scene?

MOPÉ:
Oh without a doubt the VJ's, really anyone that does visual media. Some of the best shows I've seen have been elevated so much higher due to the people running the visuals. Not only that but the homies that make artwork or logos. That's such an important aspect that not a lot of producers/dj's think about.

What makes a great dj?

MOPÉ:
I think a good sense of identity. Staying true to yourself and your music. That's the kind of stuff that really shines through in your performance and skills. You can build up the chops and skills all you want, but you've gotta have a solid handle on who you are and what you want to emulate in your djing in order to really stand out.

So you go by MOPÉ what does your name mean to you?

MOPÉ:
It comes from my fathers nickname, Mopé. I didn't grow up with him around, due to a lot of reasons, and one of the only things I had learned about him was that his nickname was Mopé. Once I started releasing beats and putting myself out there, it just felt like the right name to go under. It represents my history and heritage, who I am and where I come from.

What does hyvemynd mean to you and what should it mean to other people?

HYVEMYND:
I’ve had a rough past dealing with abandonment at times due to an inability to conform with groups, even when I try to mask heavily. So, in a way, I couldn’t delve in to all the different hive minds in the area. So as a result, I had to create my own as an alias, and I want my name to be an invitation for people to let out their rage and frustrations in life, and have a moment where people find unison, where behind the decks I’m in control of that. So when I play live, it feels cathartic.

When did you start the project?

HYVEMYND:
I dabbled with DJing back in May 2022 after I got hit with COVID, mostly with a friend’s Serato board that I’d borrow. It eventually led to me investing in my own board in July of 2022, and began to really practice mixing. I dropped a mix of July of 2022, so I’d say that’s when Hyvemynd was truly born, but it officially launched on social media in September of 2022. I got booked by a friend in October for a small Halloween show that next month. Since then, I’ve focused on fostering connections within communities and building a base to work off of.

What kind of hurdles have  encountered and how did you overcome them? And in hindsight was there an easier way?

HYVEMYND:

What does your name mean to you? 

SKVLEZ:
SKVLEZ (pronounced scales) means a lot to me, and actually has multiple meanings. My horoscope sign is the Libra scale which represents balance which is also something that my project greatly represents. Scales are something used in music production and different scales can help set the mood for your song. Then there are reptile/fish/dragon/etc scales which symbolically and visually play a huge role in the project. Digital scales have also been a big part of my life and this project. The spelling of the name just worked itself out out, I think it flows off the tongue really well and actually has my nickname “KEV” within it. Also I think the confusion that the spelling causes creates a spark of interest/curiosity in the project and is a great conversation starter.
