If we had to choose between two scenes one depicting the people inside the train and the other showing people observing the passing train I would choose the latter. This choice is similar to the deci sions we face in life, whether to seek stability or embrace exploration.
In this album I combined a lot of field recordings with the resonant texture of Pandora's Box. The auditory experience of a train roaring by has a unique appeal to me. Growing up in western Sichuan, China, I was lucky enough to gaze out the window of my home at a long, thin railroad track. As a child, I was fascinated by the sight of these trains and let my imagination run free. On those warm summer nights, I pondered who the passengers were, and the adventures that awaited them.
As time passes, the old green trains gradually fade into history, and the individuals who once rode them may also vanish in every corner of the world. The beauty lies in the fact that the memory of these sounds will accompany us deep into the recesses of our memories.

As a musician, you must give yourself space to create while listening to music. The practice I mean is to constantly try to play, to find your own expression in music. In the early creation, I I like to work with many musicians from different international music backgrounds. Now I enjoy the actual life to record. In the morning temple, in the subway, in the park, you can collect these interesting music materials. One of my favorite things in my creation is to cover my eyes with the eye mask to play the Erhu , I can only listen to it and play the erhu in a dark place. There will always be an infinite amount of musical expression.

Reduced is a new series that strips sound back to its most transcendental, restorative and atmospheric textures to block out the noise and aid focus, attunement and relaxation. Each one will be paired with a mental health charity and be accompanied by an interview focussed on self-care. The combination of all three will create an evolving resource of knowledge and experience that provides solace, inspiration, reassurance and company in difficult times.

Emotional labour from women is valuable.

Outside of the steady flow of daily tasks and the maintenance of everyday order, music provides us an opportunity to once again fall into a state of deep contemplation, breaking through the passive mundanity of quotidian life. After a four-month hiatus, Scandal has gathered together eight local female producers to launch its debut compilation “Scandal: Alexithymia 述情障碍” in January of 2022. This release will also officially mark the establishment of the Scandal label. We will also continue to achieve our goal: to help more women express their creative desires and pursue their creative passions, and increase the representation of female musicians.

The term Alexithymia is a classical compound combining the ancient Greek words “a-” “léxis” “thymós”, respectively translated as "no" "speech" "emotion". Taken literally, the term means “silent and ruthless”. In the field of psychiatry, alexithymia is a personality trait characterized by the inability to perceive and express emotions in daily life.

“Scandal: Alexithymia 述情障碍” intends to reflect on the current atmosphere of atomization and fragmentation in our society, inviting eight local female producers to demonstrate how they express this emotional blockage through their music. At present, alexithymia is ubiquitous, exacerbated by coronavirus social distancing, an increasingly polarized political landscape when it comes to social and identity-based issues, or other reasons we’re unable to discuss. In a world where we can’t speak to our emotions, we need the interpretive power of music more than ever.

Mei has been exploring and expanding the many possibilities of music and sound creating this energy into a rhythm turning the dance floor into a frenzy.

Last summer Sunju Hargun’s Siamese Twins imprint shared their second pan-Asian compilation which gave a spotlight to artists who are exploring ambient and psychedelic terrain. The cassette release, titled Kāthā - a Khmer and Thai name for sacred mantras that are chanted to bring protection and charm - featured music from Khun Fluff, Nic Ford, Mogambo, Temple Rat and more. The label have brought on board a new roster of artists who offer up their own takes on the original material; there’s a rhythmic low end excursion from Konduku; a double offering from Jonathan Kusuma; and a modulated IDM trip from Higher Intelligence Agency.

PREMIERE: Temple Rat - Walpurgis Nacht [Qilla Records]

The surface and depth of water, its playfulness and danger, its frozen and flowing forms, water is never still, always in motion. It is fragile, sensitive to even the slightest environmental changes, yet simultaneously powerful and dangerous. For this recording, I drew inspiration from Laozi’s Dao De Jing, particularly the concept of “The highest good is like water” (上善若水). The nature of water—benefiting all things without contention—deeply resonates with me. Water can softly wear down stone yet transform into sharp ice, and its mutable qualities have shaped how sound evolves in this recording.

On a deeper level, this philosophy influences how I approach life: facing its highs and lows with the softness and resilience of water, and embracing the unknown with quiet strength. I hope this piece resonates with you as much as it did with me during its creation.

American ecologist Aldo Leopold once spoke of “thinking like a mountain”—a way of seeing that honors patience, interdependence, and deep time. Composer Pauline Oliveros invited us to practice “deep listening,” attuning to sound as a bridge between inner and outer worlds.

I often ask myself: What is our relationship to the environment? Do we know it well enough to protect it?

This work listens to the fragile threads between humans, nature, and machines.
Woven from field recordings of natural and industrial environments, it unfolds as a resonant space of stillness and rupture—revealing the precarious beauty of our sonic world.

In collaboration with Nuño de la Serna, a suspended kinetic sculpture made from reclaimed materials extends this reflection into space. Its slow movement and recycled form echo themes of waste, renewal, and the shifting lifespans of matter.

In an age of acceleration and acoustic saturation, Thinking as a Mountain asks us to use our ears as eyes—to sense the mountain not as static, but as alive, breathing, interconnected. Through attentive listening, we may begin to hear what the mountain has always known.

Next up in our mix series is Temple Rat - a Berlin based sound designer, Erhu player, and DJ originally from Sichuan. Blending traditional folk instruments with experimental electronic production, she incorporates self-built sound tools, field recordings, and deep, driving rhythms to craft her signature sound. With releases on labels such as Siamese Twins Records, Qilla Records, and FuFu Records, her discography reflects a rich spectrum of influences and sonic explorations. Beyond her solo work, Temple Rat co-runs the collectives Er Ting Ba Fang (耳聽八方) and Jia La, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and collaboration through music.

This mix is a one-hour live set of unreleased and forthcoming productions, recorded at RSO Berlin in September via Deestricted. Metallic and mineral soundscapes collide with fluid, watery tones, drenched in acid grooves and propelled by laser-sharp samples and percussion. A journey for deep listening, where textures shimmer and drones align for true hypnotism.
