Once

إلى دمشق،
كنت أمشي شوارع باريس ليلاً عندما دقت أجراس نوتردام لفترة من الزمن، أخذتني إلى مكان مستوحش، جداً.
ذكرني بشخصية الأحدب نوتردام الذي كان منبوذاً، وحيداً يدق أجراس ألمه غضباً على مجتمع رفض وجوده.
تماماً كحال كثير من الناس في دمشق، بالتحديد جدتي.
جدتي لم تترك منزلها منذ ثلاث سنين و نصف، خوفاً من أن لا ترجع أو فكرة خروجها ورجوعها إلى ركام حجر.
هذا البيت العربي، المليء بالضوء و الشجر.. قررت أنها لن تموت إلا فيه.
خالي، الذي يعيش معها، يقبلها على رأسها كل يوم تيقناً بقدر غير معروف.
لم أرى جدتي زينب منذ ثلاث سنين، ولكن أشعر بما تشعر و هذا لحنه.

In homage to Damascus,
I was walking next to Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. The bells has just started ringing, taking me and time to a rather lonely, actually.. A very lonely place. As the bells conveyed to me the mere emotions of the fiction character, Victor Hugo’s Hunchback of Norte Dame. I’d like to believe that he was real and that he was talking to people who judged him through his bells of pain and agony.
That reminded me of the people in Damascus, my grand mother to be specific. She hasn’t left her sanctuary, her Arabic house that’s filled with light and trees. She also hasn’t left it outside for the past three years and a half, in fear of no return or the fact that she might return to a pile of stone. My uncle, who lives with her, kisses her goodbye every day before he goes out to make a living, or rather a mean of survival.
Teita Zainab has decided that if she’s dying somewhere, it will be her home.
I haven’t seen her beauty for three years now, it’s impossible to reach her but I feel both her pain and agony. This piece is what it feels like.
