"The relationship of Alley Catss (aka Máté Janky) and EXILES dates back to the very beginning of the label and includes numerous joint efforts and memorable collaborations. He kicked off the first compilation album (EX01) of the label in 2017, contributed several tracks to various VA albums throughout the years, plus he co-organized events and mixes with EXILES, bringing forth artists from his own label too (Daddypower Records). It was just about time to finally have the first full-length Alley Catss release landing in the catalog, presenting seven ethereal tracks, each bearing Janky’s unique voice and dedicated vision for composition and sound design.

Vernacular Cortex Music is a sharp and focused sonic journey in 30 minutes, representing both hard-hitting, glitched beats and icy digitalia as well as fantasy-oriented, dreamlike scenarios. Stepping off the grid and exploring uncharted territories, the first three tracks (st_x, β and β<) share an attitude of overdriven madness, firing up kickdrums, distorted screams and rumbling bass. As the album progresses to Εσχ, the pieces of sound introduced in the first half of the album become even more scattered with more space to breathe, which then slowly fade into a coherent sonic sphere of echoes, mechanic angst and rusted, suffocating dread.

The latter half of Vernacular Cortex Music is a much more sensitive, careful and tender take that bears the stains of stress and uncertainty (_yg), yet shows a way to a future that promises care, joy and an idea of sanity. Like going back to sleep after waking up from a nightmare, +C takes us to a gentle world of sweet dreams, full of virtual harpsichords and iconic organ basses. Finishing up the album, _int is a beatless, waving pulsation with soft rumbles, mellow sighs and bubbling reverberations, slowly closing up Alley Catss’ long-awaited debut on EXILES." - Nemerov

Mourning is an experimental electronic track defined by its melancholic synth melody. The smooth, emotive synthesizer lines evoke a profound sense of sorrow, while the aggressively chopped and almost chaotic drum patterns provide a dynamic yet oppressive rhythm. The interplay of these contrasting elements creates an atmosphere that is both sensitive and tense, inviting the listener on a deep, introspective journey.

²²SAUD (SUTRA) [SRB]

On today’s Select, we have SAUD, a veteran DJ hailing from Belgrade, Serbia, recognised for his multicoloured hypersonics, blending hardcore breakbeat patterns with contemporary gradients that gravitate towards a regenerated form of rhythmic psychedelia. He is also the co-founder of Belgradie-based famed rave platform SUTRA, which has brought a roster of acclaimed producers the likes of Gabber Modus Operandi, ZULI, Abadir, Aisha Devi, Mumdance, Batuu, Lee Gamble, Flore and more, to Serbia’s clubbing scene over the last 7 years.

Besides running SUTRA, SAUD was featured on Boiler Room x Belgrade. He has also played in various clubs and venues across the globe, from NYC, Berlin, and France, to Austria, Belgium, Norway, Poland, and Beirut, just to name a few. In 2023, he also launched his own club in New Belgrade called Živa.

For our 289th Select, SAUD shares the set he played at his club Živa’s season-opening party that took place earlier this year, featuring Kuwaiti producer Van Boom on the lineup. The set, a whirlwind of saturated bass sounds, razor-sharp electro, distorted drum patterns and vocal samples, features tunes by the likes of 3Phaz and Van Boom. “This one is dedicated to my lovely people in Beirut, whom I think of every passing hour,” SAUD tells SceneNoise.

🗣️: This is the first mix of mine where older, almost “archival” music clearly takes the lead over fresh stuff. I wanted to expand on an idea I teased in my 20-minute segment in the last mix with Julek Ploski and Fire-Toolz—looking for a sonic bridge between music composed for games, anime, and films around the Y2K era and today’s umm... “internet” music? i guess

the more I dug, the more in awe I was of people like Yoko Kanno, Masashi Hamauzu, or Hitoshi Sakamoto... that music is just incredible. and honestly — I’m not some kind of otaku, I know next to nothing about anime. but the music? so many gems hidden in those archives...

so yeah, I’d say the mix leans toward easy listening—I wanted it to be an immersive journey, at times dreamy/melancholic. I was searching for a sense of adventure and this kind of childlike naivety/innocence. there are also some tracks totally outside the OST realm, just because they worked musically next to each other, no deeper meaning.
