Purelink have been described more than once as an "ambient boy band." (They themselves say "jam band.") It's not meant dismissively—the American trio purposefully mean to function as a band, even if their main instruments are laptops. Ambient might not quite cut it as a descriptor, though. The group's music crosses eras and scenes, touching on the late '90s clicks & cuts boom as well as the billowy ambient techno put out by labels like 3XL, West Mineral Ltd. and NAFF. 

Their most recent LP, Signs, released on enigmatic imprint Peak Oil (and one of our favourite albums of 2023), is especially impressive, made of stuttering rhythms and glassy textures. In other words, it's ambient-not-ambient. While members Concave Reflection, kindtree and Millia have all made excellent music on their own, something special happens when they come together.

Purelink's RA Podcast is another stellar contribution to our post-New Year's tradition, where we highlight a more laid-back sound to soothe weary minds and frazzled brain cells after the heavy holiday celebrations. This is 90-plus minutes of intricately textured downtempo, dub techno and even UK garage, all cut through with a floaty, almost drowsy quality, with plenty of exclusives and unreleased cuts from the likes of Nick León, James K, Downstairs J and more. It highlights Purelink's position as a bridger of worlds, sounds and tempos.

Q. What inspiration did you draw upon when planning this mix, and what type of listening environment could you imagine it being easily enjoyed in? 

A. I actually looked through my rekordbox history from a recent Animalia night I played in Naarm and drew some inspiration from that. When listening back to the mix I can imagine it being played for a semi-casual game of Futsal or something like that. I feel like there are some light-footed tracks in there that would be useful to some nimble futsal players. 

Q. Are there any songs in the mix that are especially close to your heart, and what is it about these cuts that resonate with you so much?

A. Mata by Nidia & Valentina

It's taken off  a truly sublime Album that I draw lots of inspiration from. It's simultaneously organic and loose and club-playable, which is a tough one to get right. It's something I’m constantly trying to achieve but they seem to have done it effortlessly.

I actually tried to google to see if I’ve ever put this tune in another guest mix before. I probably have, so I’ll apologise for that now. Cliques has always had a big influence on me since I started producing music. They’ve since stopped producing themselves which is a shame but I always play their old tunes out if I can. RIP Cliques..

Q. One of the things I’ve been fascinated with in your DJ sets (the Sustain-Release set for example) is your mixing of polyrhythms to seamlessly bridge tempos throughout a set. How did you first get inspired to experiment with this style and what are some of otherwise conflicting genres/sounds that have blended nicely?

A. My DJing style is at times an extension of my music production. I think this might be a good example of that. The sustain release transition from 150 to 100 is using a tune that I produced years ago in a 3/4 time signature. I’ve produced a few tunes over the past few years that are able to do that. It just allows me at times to bounce around to different worlds and stops me from feeling stuck in a tempo-range. I haven’t done it so much recently but I’d like to get back into doing it. It can create a really strange feeling for the audience. At Sustain-Release, a lot of the audience were on hallucinogens so it felt appropriate to get trippy in that way. It's harder to pull off in a nightclub environment.

I’m no longer sure what the original inspiration for experimenting with this style was. Playing a lot of tunes that have a polyrhythm in them can often make you feel like you have the option to dance at two different tempos.

Extracted from the archives, we have Lena's Bank Holiday set from last August for you. 
It was sadly Lena's only set at The Gun, but it was a wild night, sweaty and heaving in the extreme & certainly one of favourites. The crowd had been dancing from about 7pm (Casper Clark and I's warm up is also available here) so when Lena got on for the remaining 4.5 hours, the room went nuts. Its a brilliantly varied and balanced set that encapsulates so much of what we loved at The Gun, banging enough for a room full of seething heads. dancing into the early hours and considered and classy do that it suits playback at any time of the day.
The recorder died just before the end of the set, so it appears those very last tracks were just for us there on that night, the rest is ready now. (Thanks for this Lena x)

Well Well, welcome back. Open arms hug. Stern Handshake. Slight bow. High five (eyes locked on each other’s elbow). Pat on the back. Kiss on the cheek. Warm embrace. All the things we’ve missed are now awkward parts of life that we must get used to again. However, one thing that eternally remains is the need for a fucking good mix to bump, and boy has Chico G delivered (as if he wouldn’t?!?!). Chico has summoned his esteemed vibe smith abilities on this one, dishing out nothing but head jerkers and neck workers. 

Chico, Chico, Chico, a multifaceted diamond in the rough. The man can do no wrong. Seeing him go from strength to strength over the last however many years has been an absolute delight. Whether it is curating your tastebuds or your earbuds, he’s done everything with a certain pizzazz that only he can muster up. A consistent testament to his character is the never-ending hard work he puts into Skylab Radio, which almost single-handedly floats Melbourne's love for good music. He’s established himself as a bit of a cultural cornerstone in Melbourne and we’re all for it. This is just a friendly reminder of what Chico can do when he’s able to step back from his other duties and get behind the decks. 

Now for the important part; the finely curated musical selection, poetically arranged. This mix absolutely slaps, guaranteed 100% good vibrations. From the very start when you hear Missy Elliot singing her piece you know you’re in good hands. Classic after classic, beautifully strung together like washed-up shells around a surfer's neck. This will be one of those ‘forever’ mixes you keep on a USB that your grandkids will find in 70 years' time and unearth some old laptop, which will ultimately lead to Rush Hour repressing it onto a traditional compact disc and Chico doing hologram sets at pizza joints around the world. 

Enough bullshit. Just listen to it.
