The bearer of bad news is talking to the breeze. Floating forth a message, hiding in the trees. The weary voice inside you is darker in the night. The healing hand, the morning light. While you’re out wasting time with the right guy. Tell the early morning that I am on my way. Send to him my greetings for happy holidays. Spend my open eyes on the things I left behind. My sturdy feet and my hopeful life. While you’re out wasting time with the right guy. The rich man counts his money and holds it in the light, folds the ends together and keeps it by his side. He counts his every blessing heaped upon our heads, and tells us to remember them. While you’re out wasting time with the right guy.

Meticulously written over four years and recorded over one in a makeshift studio set up in his parent’s basement, Shauf, whose delivery at times reminds of Elliott Smith or Paul Simon, plays nearly every instrument on The Bearer of Bad News. The album was crafted on his grandfather’s timeworn guitar and heavily influenced by the aforementioned—and newly learned—clarinet, which was a Christmas gift from family. In spite of his modest recording set-up, Shauf imbued The Bearer of Bad News with an enduring warmth and redolence that lingers long after the album ends.

Wendell Walker was a friend of mine. We’d stain our teeth in the summertime, and with lips of purple, the winter would roll past the boarded windows into our souls and shake our weary bones. Now this past winter was the coldest in years. It’s hard to explain if you’ve never lived here, but it locks your doors and starts your mind thinking in circles just to pass the time, and breaks your weary heart. Now Wendell Walker was a man of God, but he didn’t care much for his sober mind, and when the cold mixed in he was turned around. Heard the voice of God and the angels sound a message just for him: “My son, my son, she is the devil’s child. Won’t you save her while you can? Cut down the other man.” Now Wendell Walker was a friend of mine, but he married too young in the summertime. Their hearts weren’t ripe so they fell apart, and I found myself with a joyful heart as our secret lives began. We found our moments in between the hours when Wendell Walker drove his car to town. But one day he found a letter that I wrote for her on the top of her dresser and in his winter mind he heard the voice of God say: “My son, my son, she is the devil’s child. Won’t you save her while you can? Cut down the other man.” With the voice of the Lord ringing in his ears and the note to his wife that confirmed his fears, he sat down on the edge of the bed, read the letter again to see who’d sent it but it was signed ‘Forever Yours.’ He stood up slow like he’d just been hit, walked into the kitchen where his wife was sitting he said, “My mother called on the telephone. She says she needs some help so I’ll be back in the morning,” and he grabbed his heavy coat. My phone rang while I was watching the news. She said the house was ours to cure these winter blues. So I made my way, and we turned the blinds and Wendell walked in just in time to see our secret die and say: “My son, my son: I’m gonna have to cut you down.” He pointed his rifle to my eyes, but his hesitating hands were shaking from the cold. So I pushed his gun away just as he found his strength, and the bullet kissed her lips, and I cried: “My God, my God what have I done?” And he reloaded his gun, and he put it in his mouth, and I stood in the room that I’d created.

Scott Huerta on "White Noise":
The original title for the demo of this song was "Bruce" because I thought I was writing a Springsteen song. My goal starting out was to not overthink it and just make a straightforward rock song, but that didn't last very long and next thing I knew I was listening to three guitar tracks playing lead lines at the same time thinking 'what have I done'. Instead of reeling it back in I decided to just lean into it and when I found myself playing with an electronic drum pad I knew I was past the point of no return. I've always liked when songs use weaving guitar lines in place of fully strummed chords so I used that idea for the choruses and ended up with something that was either pretty sounding or just chaotic. That in mind I thought it would be neat to use the second verse as a sort of anchor for all that guitar movement by telling a short anecdote about someone leaving somebody an anonymous wordless voicemail, but being exposed by the background noises.

I had a 'Best Of The Beach Boys' CD that my grandma gave me and I fell in love with Brian Wilson's songwriting. Then I heard "God Only Knows" and I was mush. I was listening to that song on repeat next to Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman" when I wrote this song. Ballads don't come easy to me so at the end of the first demo you can hear me say "finally" because I was just happy to make it through.

The Portland act’s fourth offering is a sweeping, playful and vulnerable collection that’s ripe with both musical and personal discovery. From the intimate, contemplative verses of the Spanish-language title track to the revelations delivered over the loping beats of “Ostrich,” this is an album that’s painstakingly produced while remaining emotionally raw.
Throughout the collection, Y La Bamba front woman Luz Elena Mendoza returns to themes of searching, metamorphosis, shared humanity and for a faith that is greater than just religion. 
Born in San Francisco, she spent her childhood summers playing in the orchards of California’s San Joaquin Valley with her cousins, and it was there that she soaked up the melodies and stories that were being told through traditional folk songs with three-part harmonies.
These are songs built to soundtrack coming to grips, not just with one’s own mortality, but with the fragility of the world. This is heady, emotional fare, and “this record is about being a mother to these emotions,” Mendoza says.
“I am thankful for all of my hardships,they have guided me to find rest in my soul, time after time. Over and over again.”

Y La Bamba has been many things, but at the heart of it is singer-songwriter Luz Elena Mendoza’s inquisitive sense of self. Their fifth record, Mujeres, carries on the Portland-based band’s affinity for spiritual contemplation, but goes a step further in telling a story with a full emotional spectrum. Coming off Ojos Del Sol, one of NPR’s Top 50 Albums of 2016, Mujeres exhibits the scope of Mendoza’s artistic voice like never before. “Soy como soy,” Mendoza says, and that declaration is the bold— even political— statement that positions Mujeres to be Y La Bamba’s most unbridled offering yet. Mendoza forges new narratives from old stories of heritage and family, tracing history while forging modern chicana feminism. The raw honesty of Mujeres is in fact the raw honesty of Mendoza. Armed with the emotionality of traditional música mexicana and the storytelling of American folk, Y La Bamba’s artistry is not just their musical ability but Mendoza’s search for unadulterated truth. It is in an ancestral journey in which Mendoza comes to terms with the influence and limitations of her upbringing. While there is a celebration of the Mexican creativity that has informed Mendoza’s life, there is a darker side to reconcile with. Where do mujeres fit in to the American story? What are the sins for which we are all guilty? How do different generations interact with the world? How can a culture become visible without being tokenized? It is no surprise that in Mujeres, Y La Bamba’s first record with Mendoza at the helm of production, Mendoza contemplates these questions to tell her story. But it is not just Mendoza’s story. Challenging a narrative and dealing with the emotionality of that effort— that is everyone’s story.
