Terabyte Records would have reached its 9th birthday, having amassed a rich history of breaking new talent in the D&B scene. GLXY, Tephra (of Tephra & Arkose fame), Sweetpea, HØST, Objectiv, Volatile Cycle, Crypticz, have all released original material with the label over the years.  After a period of hiatus the label comes back to the fore rebranded as Tenfold Audio. With a new backroom staff and 9 years of experience under their belt, they seek to reimpose themselves in the dnb conversation. 

The label’s release as Tenfold comes from Manchester-based duo High Demand, with a remix from Brazilian maestro Bungle. Opening track  “Confession” combines stepping drums with murky low-end tones and eerie vocals.  “Lust” is another stepper, this time laced with funky stabs and rolling bass. Bungle’s “Confession” remix takes us back to the turn of the millennium with his bright liquidy reinterpretation of the lead track. 

Label boss Auzi said: “I’m delighted to finally bring Tenfold to the party, and no better way to do so than the fantastic work from High Demand and Bungle. I’m treating nearly 9 years of Terabyte as the prototype - and hoping we can increase Tenfold’s successes literally tenfold.”

Terabyte Records’ eighth instalment marks a return to the depths of the deep DnB sea,
where Norwich-based duo Volatile Psycle lie in wait, ready to pounce on any ears that
venture to close to the sea floor. Despite this release being their debut on Terabyte, the pair are all too familiar in the music scene, with glitch-hop/dnb tipped releases on Caliber Music, Adapted Records and Heavy Artillery Recordings, disproving the old adage “jack of all trades, master of none’. 

Their appeal is definitely reflected in their bookings; between now
and the end of the year the bass-heavy double are set to appear in their home region Norfolk, their archrival region Suffolk, as far afield as Belgium in December, and will be expecting plenty more bookings in between.

As the daylight hours slowly but surely begin to close in, the sounds of this Volatile Psycle single remind you that the winter is coming. The pair describe this sound as ‘yard’ music, and perhaps they’re right; it certainly isn’t for a middle-class garden party.

Kicking things off in spectacular style is the A side, ‘Twisted Imagery’ is a heavyweight
monster, combining Foreign Beggars-esque vocals over a murky minimal roller concocted in the bleak Norfolk marshes. Itʼs got all the requisite elements: razor sharp drum work impeccably arranged with some real step to it, murky low-slung vocals that accentuate itʼs dark and dirty feel and what is really a lesson for any up-and-coming producer in sub bass manipulation that wouldnʼt sound out of place coming out of the Dispatch camp. The track has already received attention from Seb aka Skankandbass on Youtube, receiving 4,000 hits before it had even found a home with Terabyte.

The B side, Barricade, acts as exactly as the name suggests, trapping you in a dark and
moody stomp forbidding you from leaving the dancefloor. Definitely one for the darker heads, and is a great tool for the DJs amongst you. With many of the same elements as its opposite number, minus the vocals, itʼs a little more forward thinking in its outlook. 

The drum arrangement is a more complex than the regular 2-step beat and while the bassline is more subtle, what it loses in size, it makes up for in depth. All in all it is, at times, a haunting, evocative piece of music and at others a full-blooded piece of D&B that skips effortlessly between the two.

Whilst Terabyte recently forayed into the liquid side of the genre, they laid breadcrumbs carefully to allow them to head back to their standard catalogue where they left off;
bassheavy minimal drum and bass. This release definitely does not disappoint.

Volatile Cycle - Twisted Imagery [TB008]

Congratulations. If you’re reading this it means you survived New Years. As reward Terabyte Records have a present for you lucky people in the form of a fresh look, a new signing and something altogether rather special… Liquid Technology vol. 2. The man chosen for the job of TB010? None other than German junglist and liquid sensation…Rowpieces. 

With a string of quality releases on labels like Influenza, Phuzion, Fokuz, Soul Deep, Jazzsticks, Celsius and the mighty Goodlooking Records, he’s proven that he’s got what it takes to stand tall alongside established liquid stalwarts like LTJ Bukem and Terabyte are very proud to present another set of funky rollers for you listening pleasure.

The A-side, titled ‘Dreaming Of You’, sounds exactly like it’s title suggests. With nice chunky organic-sounding drum work, a thoughtfully long intro and a beautiful sample that flows nicely between a booming bassline that’s just large enough to bring the funk and just subtle enough to reinforce the ethereal quality of the overall tune. Layered with some lush jazzy pads, the finished product harks back to the golden age of liquid, with all the production values of a stellar young music maestro.

The other side, ‘Feelin’ Happy’, is altogether a rather more upbeat affair. It has all the elements that make the A-side such a relaxed dreamy piece of music: another gorgeous vocal sample (a bit more restrained this time), some more jazzy pads that reference back to proper rhythm and blues, and the same organic percussion - this time set against a slightly bigger bassline that propels the song along and makes it ideal for jamming to at home, or busting those funky shapes in a club.

Both tracks compliment each other perfectly and prove that Terabyte, despite their darker, more techy heritage, know good liquid when they hear it and are deft hands at any style. Bringing in such a respected figurehead in liquid drum and bass mirrors really adds weight to the label’s snowballing reputation. TB010: A perfect introduction to 2014 and a harbinger of many good things to come.

After the sublime easy-listening piece of jazzy liquid funk that was TB010, it’s back to business as usual. And by business as usual we mean some serious minimal tech brought to you by some more of the underground’s rising talent: A-Cray and Kloro4m.

The Czech Republic’s A-Cray is the heavy hitter here with an impressive back catalogue of releases on IM:LTD, Syndrome Audio, and Authentic Music to name but a few and a developed and individual minimal D&B sound. While Kloro4m, hailing from Luton, is the less established of the two producers, this Young Turk holds his own on the B side against the Czech colossus.

A-Cray’s offering, ‘Untold Stories’, is a thinking man’s monster. Armed with a creepy, metallic intro it gently builds into its blocky minimal amen beat before falling away to a haunting emptiness only to come back stronger when it drops into some serious D&B business. The rest of the scuttling, layered percussion acts as a buttress to the hard and heavy sounding main beat, and really drives home the robotic nature of the tune itself, breaking down into a classic dark amen at the end of the bar. Set against this is a bassline that growls up into the mid range, giving the song an almost funky edge, making this an unexpected dance floor weapon.

Back on the attack with Untold Stories/Solitude this release is Terabyte doing what they do best with two producers to watch in 2014.

One time fluke? Twice consistent? But three hard hitting releases from M:Pathy on our Terabyte Records go to show that this guy does not mess around.

‘Thumper’ starts with atmospheric pads and eerie FX set to a rolling, almost tribal drum beat, halting momentarily before dropping into what feels like a cave of dark, murky vibes. Littered with Spectrasoul-esque stabs and scattered percussion, this is fit for the underground.

With ‘Velocious’, M:Pathy takes us back to his signature moody half-step sound. Combining sketchy hats, subtle reeces and a deep almost shamanic atmosphere, this track is not for the feint hearted. Reminiscent of Kryptic Minds and Skeptical, this will suit fans of those artists down to a tee.

M:Pathy - Thumper [Clip] [OUT NOW!]

Terabyte Records’ latest offering comes in the form of Diffrent Music/Dispatch Recordings' very own Mauoq. With other releases on Flexout amongst other labels, Mauoq is taking the scene by storm one release at a time, and ‘Grey Scale/Itchy Way’ is by no means an exception to the rule. 


 The A-side, ‘Grey Scale’, begins by creating a striking atmosphere comprised of analog pads, creepy FX and a recurring piano stab leading you into inevitable darkness beyond. This is technical drum and bass as it should be, subtle yet monstrous bass lines boasting earth-shifting modulation coupled with punchy drums and mind bending sonic scenery.

‘Itchy Way’, the track on the flip, starts where the ‘Grey Scale’ leaves off. A simple drum beat and lovely pads with short references in the bassline indicates what is about to come. This is a track for the deep heads - warehouse vibes all round as Mauoq takes us down a crooked path filled with bizarre noises and warped bass vibrations. All in all, this is certainly one of Terabyte's strongest releases to date, and extends their already colourful catalogue to new horizons, dipping into the upper echelons of DnB producers of the moment.

Mauoq - Itchy Way [TB016]

It gives us great pleasure at Terabyte to announce yet another debutant, Cirrus, to the roster. Sharp, forward-thinking halftime has been the name of game recently, and this is certainly no exception. The opening track, ‘Drone Protocol’, opens with glitchy atmospheres and tripped out reversed FX, leading the listener into a sci-fi state of mind before hitting with a hard, droning bassline set to skippy, half-time drums and percussion that’s sure to make you move both through your headphones and the dancefloor.

‘I Know You’, the B-side, is far more psychedelic in nature. A glassy atmosphere and eerie vocal samples intertwine to really take you away from reality. Seemingly out of nowhere the bass hits. The percussion is disorientating yet beautiful, falling in line with the rest of our recent offerings. As if this track wasn't hard enough, perfectly produced breaks are peppered throughout to add another dimension to this already multifaceted stomper of a track.

Cirrus - Drone Protocol [OUT MAR 9] [TB018]

Terabyte Records would like to welcome Sonis to their roster. Otherwise known as Alex Rehberg, this Oregon-based debutant’s release with the label showcases Terabyte’s love for fresh new sounds perfectly, and literally. The opening track, ‘Killah Sound’, is a far-cry from their previous release, and switches the vibe to a much darker, aggressive one. The drum line pounds through the track heavily, reinforced by a bass-heavy reese - a half step stomper sure to set dance floors on fire in the coming weeks. 

Expect a bright future for Sonis.

An eerie and ominous opening sequence in ‘400ft’ makes away for some beautifully gritty low-end textures that leave the listener entranced with no clear escape route. Clever FX and pad work make for a top tune that will shake up the dance.

PRTCL & Sweetpea - 400Ft [OUT 1 APR]

Terabyte Records has never been shy to dip into the far flung corners of D&B, and it’s twenty sixth release is no different. With the ‘20/20’ spring having sprung to deadly effect, enter Depth Range: a German four-piece consisting of ReDraft, Reminder, HP.Ritch & Kid Kun. These lads have already been flirting with Ivy Lab’s new imprint, but Terabyte pinned down a fantastic 4-track ‘Depth Range EP’ now ready to be revealed in all its glory.

The opening track, ‘Your Love’, a combo effort from ReDraft & Reminder opens with ethereal pads and echoed vocals, building and dropping into a crazy footwork-influenced banger; the perfect balance between total war music and soulful wizardry. ‘Tell Them’, a herculean track from ReDraft & HP.Ritch, comes straight out the shotgun with an almost pneumatic bassline that will definitely get more than its fair share of wheel ups and reloads. If the opener wasn’t ‘war’ enough for you, this definitely will correct that pronto.

Track three, ‘Moon’, from ReDraft & Kid Kun features a droning bassline coupled with frantic yet expertly precise percussive elements that make this one hypnotic and entrancing. One for the deepest of sets or the most emotive of audio journeys. The final piece is ReDraft’s final bullet in the chamber. ‘Hyposphere’ has 31 Recordings, Om Unit, Loxy & Resound, and Blocks & Escher fused in an almost nuclear capacity, generating enough energy to make the most hardy of listeners lose their grip.


ReDraft & Reminder - Your Love [TB026]

Whilst it is in the Terabyte nature to break new artists, never can they be said to neglect their stalwarts. Their 27th release in their main catalogue comes from an artist who has lived and breathed Terabyte since it’s inception. May they proudly present the Isolation EP from label all-star M:Pathy.

A concept EP in it’s nature, M:Pathy explores emotions and ideas connected to the idea of isolation. The grand opener, ‘Toil’, brings an entrancing war-dance-like beat with a droning sub. The struggle with overbearing FX immerses the listener in a fight to stave off the darkness.

Duly infected by the opening track, Tom Hook joins forces to purge the listener of their ills with 'Quarantine'. The sonic struggle is encapsulating; creepy FX and horrifying risers highlight the suffering and anxiety quarantine presents.

The title track ‘Isolation’ initially offers some respite, but this is a false dawn. The listener is dragged back into the abyss with stomping drums and a barrage of mechanical FX completely scatter any hopes of keeping your head together. This track truly personifies the madness one might be presented with if they have no one to support them.

The final track, ‘Sombre’, in collaboration with Elkie, represents relief. Having been through the ringer of isolation, a feeling of sadness, yet completion overtakes the listener. The final chapter of the EP consists of a stripped back framework with clever percussive elements and arpeggiated synths.
 
The EP can be listened to continuously, or tracks can be pulled in isolation for iPods and club dancefloors alike. With a seemingly long time out of the game, the EP has a personal edge on the artist’s path and provides a deeper and more mature approach to previous instalments.

M:Pathy - Sombre ft. Elkie [TB027][OUT 8 JULY]

Terabyte’s twenty-eighth release sees a return from the popular producer from across the pond, Cirrus. Since his last release on the label, Ian has branched out with releases on Nurtured Beatz, AutomAte Deep, and more recently his own imprint Terra Null Recordings. His approach has always been minimal and deep, and ‘No Matter / Originals’ is no departure from that; his signature sound powers through with more strength than ever. 

The A-side, ‘No Matter’ is a full-blown stepper punctuated by fidgety breaks and eerie pads. The listener is drawn in and entranced by the ominous soundscape; think Samurai Music in its droves.

The B-side, ‘Originals’ is much of the same. Aggravated patois vocals atop a weighty sub-bass and accompanying drum work that is so easily identifiable as Cirrus.

As the Terabyte catalogue numbers rise higher and higher, so too does the quality of the work those numbers catalogue. Cirrus’ production levels are continually receiving praise from all corners of electronica, and this single represents Terabyte’s continuing vision to push deserving standard-bearers of sound production into the limelight.

The first track, ‘Forward’ features tribal percussion that rolls out amongst shamanistic, echoey chants and vocals. Think Om Unit’s Bedouin cousin.

The other side, ‘Gobi’ comes from a similar place – ritualistic drums and hypnotic, entrancing vocals totally captivate the listener.

The Terabyte juggernaught shows little sign of slowing down this year as Tash Harber AKA Sweetpea takes centre stage for its 36th installment of the catalogue. Since Pea’s first forays on the label with PRTCL in 2016, she’s since worked up the gears with stellar releases on Addictive Behaviour, Dispatch and Med School. Now she returns to roost with us.  

The first track, ‘Dutty Wine’ features an enchanting melody with hard-hitting and deep drum work. 

The other side, ‘Don’t Talk Back’ combines rolling drums and rib rattling snares with shamanistic vocals.

Terabyte’s past roll of the dice for 2018 is more like two rolling armadillos - these tracks have armour. 

Courtesy of Context Audio maestros Colony, these two shells are straight from a weapons cache and ready to fire. 

“Helix” combines crisp drums with marauding stabs and a relentless sub bass, whereas “Youyouyou” is an altogether different beast, mixing catchy vocals with an arrangement that seems to combine a footwork, half time feel with a rolling one - one for the likes of Fixate and co. 

Co-founder Auzi says of the release: “Another technical masterpiece from up and coming UK-based Colony. If these guys keep up the momentum we want to help build for them, I foresee big moves.” 

Whatever usually floats your boat, this will take your fancy; the two-track is testament to the quality-driven, style-agnostic mantra Terabyte has embodied throughout its lifespan.

Terabyte Records re-emerge from a winter of hibernation with a barnstorming update of their ‘Remixes, vol’ series, dipping into releases of the recent past and giving them a brand new lick for 2019 from two reputable label bosses from the D&B scene. 

The a-side remix of a new classic, Marsden’s ‘Aether’, comes from US-based liquid genius, Random Movement. Famous for his Flight Patterns podcasts and his label of the same name, he puts his own jazzy spin on Marsden’s beautiful original.

The b-side remix is right at the other end of the spectrum, as Nurtured Beatz co-boss Kalm entirely reskins Quantum Mechanix’s ‘Vendetta’. As well as his solo work, Kalm is known as part of collab group Kolectiv of Dispatch, Diffrent and Cyberfunk fame amongst others, and his talents shine through in this merky reinterpretation.
