Stirring a pot on the stove
I'm hoping I will feel 
better at the break of day

I think about abstraction 
I think about it all
and my soup starts to 
warm

In New York City every day
at the diner 
has a soup of the day
and Campbells is the same
they've got Chicken Noodle
Navy Bean
Split Pea
and my favorite: Tomato and 
my Dad used to add milk
and I loved it
God I miss those days
simple choices 
simple soup
pan on the stove
and now I'm missing 
You
soups at a boil 
I turn off the stove
I eat a bowl and I 
feel better 
soup is medicine
my childhood 
and the can has
never changed.

there's always a line of girls
lined up against the wall
praying, hoping someone 
will ask them to dance 
after all
and they're pale without lipstick
and a twist of tissue in their hand
and they're standing on tiptoe 
watching everyone else

and the wallflowers line up
and they watch the dancers 
twirl under the lights and 
they wish that they could
but the boys never ask them
in their pale shyness to dance

and so they imagine romance
