Imitation can be the sincerest form of flattery. That’s how we felt initially when Michel Baumann ― a.k.a. Soulphiction ― used our sample from a demo we sent him over a year ago, but when he rereleased his own version under his name we were shocked to say the least. 

A part of the beauty involved with sample-based music is re-contextualizing sounds to make a new statement, and in that vein, juxtaposition and contrast make a mysterious or solid sample that much more meaningful, especially when it’s the first time used by a producer. Like a virgin, we never forget our first time, and Michel took that away from us by fucking us.

When it comes to Discrete’s internationally supported house classic ‘Mind And Body’, we maintain the position that timeless art speaks for itself and that bad things happen to bad people.

In a similar incident between Gene Siewing and another producer *cough, cough* Crom, Gene reminds us that “Your worst enemy is your best teacher”, and it’s from this experience we’ve learned to never do business with people with ulterior motives.

The rest of the EP, however less controversial, is grade A quality production you can trust from your favourite DJ, Discrete. Rare-groovin’ samples and Disco allusions throughout ‘To Keep You’ could probably crack a smile on the most cynical of DJ’s expressions, and maybe even help get them lucky, if you know what we mean.

There’s a buzz in the air when it comes to ‘Our Love’, or at least that’s how we feel when it’s playing at a party and our dancing friends dilated pupils connect with our own. Bouncy kick drums lift us up to that higher state of consciousness, where soft, soothing whispers only a woman can pronounce reminds us how love is meant to be shared.

To finish off the EP, Discrete blesses us with a more experimental outro. The mere two samples weaving in and out bring us back to the idea of how new meaning can be introduced by simple contrast.

In the lead up to his debut solo album the Ten Thousand Yen label boss returns home with four essential cuts, with two vocal features from LA's Seven Davis Jr. 

The EP is led by 'What's It Gonna Be' which has been picking up love in the clubs and on radio by the likes of Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Skream, B Traits, Ame & Dixon and more.

From the disco-charged drive of 'Together' to house/acid/techno morph 'Ghost Text' to the R&B lean of 'I Promise', the From Mine To Mistress EP is a diverse collection of tunes that really show off Daneeka's varied production style.

Over the past 6 years WOLF Music have earned their stripes as stalwart purveyors of refined House and Disco. Now, in the follow up to Medlar and Greymatter’s debut LPs and EPs from the likes of Ishmael, Ossie and Casino Times they ready their 3rd LP from Dutchman Frits Wentink.

Now residing in Amsterdam, Frits has a glowing back catalogue of soulful, Lo Fi club material that’s touched Heist Recordings as well as WOLF in the form of his ‘Mouse’ and ‘Goose’ EPs. With an experimental approach to hardware and instrumentation, his work blooms naturally through jams and improv and in this - his debut LP: ‘Rarely Pure, Never Simple’ we see a development in this experimentation to enlivening effect.

Working with a meld of grubby samples, chunky percussion and the frequent vocal accompaniment of Utrecht based Loes Jongerling, Rarely Pure Never Simple is a journey through Frits’ influences forged into a cohesive pack of grooves and interludes tinged with a certain charming nostalgia.

Hollis Parker is a new talent from London & ‘What You’ve Done’ is the lead single from his forthcoming album The Last Raw Era is coming out on SoSure Music. 

The Last Raw Era is themed around two distinct love stories: that evolving relationship between two fictional characters, and the entirely real emotion Hollis wears on his sleeve about New York, calling it “the foundation upon which I’m built”. A hazy melancholy informs much of the album’s tone, with obscure samples dusted off and given a new lease of life in songs that evoke the languid production of Moomin as much as the raw house cuts of the early US masters.

‘What You’ve Done’ is one of the stand-out cuts from the album: simultaneously heartbreaking and uplifting with a 4/4 structure that holds a myriad of samples, vocal snippets and atmospheric melodies in place.
