The colors are stunning. In a single view, I see looking out at the edge of the earth, all the colors of the prism. Red at the horizon, blends to orange and yellow, followed by a thin white line, then light blue, gradually turning to dark blue, then black as the vastness of space engulfs the surroundings. As I looked upon our home rock, I saw many natural features. I witnessed a large river meandering slowly along for miles, passing from one country to another without stopping or hesitation. When one googles the word "Wonky," a slew of dictionary definitions arise---crooked, off-center, askew, faulty, not functioning 'correctly'---these terms barely scratch the surface of what Netherlands-based producer @FritsWentink, and his impressive and relatively young label, @Bobby-Donny have to offer the dance community. Wonky is the first word that comes to mind with every release Frits unveils (spanning back to his remarkably prolific 2015), and his newest cut, closing out from Bristol stomper Scissorwork's newest EP, is no different.

BODO005, including two new cuts from @Scissorwork is yet another striking addition to the ever-expanding world of lo-fi shufflers. Today, we premiere the release's final track, a remix of B-side 'Moonlight Boys Choir' from Wentink. Frits takes the glistening roller of an original, and....well, he wonks it right up. Bringing the tempo down marginally, Wentink throws around a hefty, chugging rhythm to kick off his version; a throbbing signal pulses through the mix, reverberating out and in, as pinprick samples and melodies are interwoven atop frequently phasing percussion. As layers upon layers of fuzz periodically lift and are reapplied to the mix, it feels as if the track's multitude of elements are being submerged underwater in real time, unable to lift their heads out for even a brief moment to take a breath.

Wentink's rendition feels brittle, like it needs to be handled with great care to hold its delicate parts together; however, there's an undeniable energy that exudes from the apparently visible seams holding it together. As tones and chords squelch out from behind what feels like a concrete wall, moments of true grit and funk seep through, allowing those paying close enough attention to find meaningful passages from beginning to end. While Frits' take on 'Moonlight Boys Choir' may not serve a peak-time release, it's more than capable of lighting the path to follow, down a weird and winding (and wonky) road.

Anthony Fade; seemingly a solo alias however, actually a duo - thus plummeting uninformed listeners self-esteem into the abyss as they utter - “Anthony Fade is good isn’t he” - just for some smart-ass to chime in and say “Erm - it’s actually THEY not HE” - Anyway; the Australian DUO (thank us later) graduate from their last release on sub-label Lost Palms, delivering three outstanding floor-driven cuts (with legend Andrés​ on remix duty!!!) for the 17th release of one of our favourite labels; Shall Not Fade.

First of all, it must be said that the release in it’s entirety is absolutely outstanding -  featuring back to front dancefloor heaters from A1 to B2, which will undoubtedly make it into the record bags of your favourite dj’s and the  onto the floors of your favourite clubs. 

This Premiere features “Creepin’” - patently the moodiest cut of the record, oozing with as much soul and sass of yer Da’s mustard corduroy flares. Acting as a vessel for the dusty, jazz fueled melody, the kick (often a neglected craft in contemporary dance music) stylishly pounds and swings throughout the record, playfully conversing with the potent accompanying raw percussion. This is the post-midnight stomper that prompts fizzing synapses, glinting eyes and nods of approval throughout the room. Hold it close - ‘twas a good night.

PREMIERE: Anthony Fade - Creepin' [Shall Not Fade]

The second release in No Bad Days' sister imprint No Bad Edits comes from Montréal upstart Unknown Mobile, who first caught our ear with a lovely debut on ASL Singles Club. Here, he looks to the 1980's for inspiration, channeling that decade's confidence and colour with three shimmering reworks.

DJ Rou & Lite Orkestra proves to be one of those original, eclectic and interesting projects for the musical research of the current scene. They got to know each other in the summer of 2014 and a character affinity was born immediately, later transformed into a very strong artistic empathy, so much so that in the immediate future they decided to meet often between Bologna and Verona for jam sessions, sharing ideas.
In the summer of 2017, Cognitiva Records became aware of the project and decided without hesitating to press 1,2,3, original tracks of the release “The Ambassador’s Way EP”.
The compositions are a combination of the electronic drums of DJ Rou (MPC, Korg Electribe and other gears), the contrabass and the guitar of LaChi + ThomasPizzini, better known as Lite Orkestra.
The result is a hybrid exuberance between jazz, afro and the experimental flow that derives from the roots of the Jam Sessions.
