     Ann slowly opened her eyes, as she was gently awoken by the rain tapping on her window. The sky was blanketed in grey and Ann was happy for the first time in as long as she could remember. There were not many things to make her life miserable. She had a mother and father and a little brother who all loved her. She was young, pretty and got exceptional marks in school. She could be anything that was respectable and appropriate. But in her heart, and increasingly in her mind, Ann knew that she was neither respectable nor appropriate.
      It was this noxious knowledge that haunted her by night and threatened to rear its horrific head by day. So Ann went about her life in a state of detached paranoia, never quite present and always afraid that she would be found out for what she really was; not like everyone else. 
      Until one day when her mother's brother, her uncle Wilfred came to visit. Wilfred and his sister were not particularly close and it had been years since he had seen Ann. Though you could not tell by looking at him, Wilfred was not like everyone else either. and it made him very sad to see his niece, in his eyes, so obviously unhappy. So that night Wilfred went upstairs and knocked on Ann's door. He came in and sat next to her on the foot of her bed and looked into her eyes in a way that no one had ever done before and he said, "fuck 'em." 
      It would be years before she would fully grasp the full profundity of Wilfred's wisdom, but it was in the unprecedented warmth and intimacy of this moment that the seeds of Ann's freedom were planted. As the morning rain continued to cascade across her window, Ann smiled, knowing that the world was large and that she was not alone.
