Theo and I wed this past June and learned many lessons since then. Society that exalts romantic love as life's highest goal-the thing that will fix most of your problems and you'll live happily ever after. We naïvely believed marriage would "fix" us in this way, but we're still broken. But, we do have a companion as we navigate the brokenness. So, in the spirit of February and Valentines Day, we wanted to write something about the most transformational relationship of all: the relationship with yourself.

MorganEva: “Here’s a funny joke: What happens when a singer-songwriter and a rapper get married?”

Theophilus: “They write you a song, place it in a beatbox, and rap it up!”

That exchange embodies “teoemmy”, a musical duo and married couple. MorganEva and Theophilus Onime got married in June of 2020 five years after meeting at Carnegie Mellon University as college students.

Six months later, teoemmy was born. 

In the most literal sense, teoemmy is the phonetic spelling of their initials."T-O-M-E."

MorganEva, born Morgan Eva Morrison, was born and raised in New Rochelle, New York and was diagnosed with hearing loss at age 8. She started singing in the children's choir of the Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem, New York at age 5. As an only child, and being bullied in school, singing was a place of deep expression for her. She started classical vocal training at the age of 13 and continued through college experimenting with Jazz and Pop. 

Born in England, Theophilus started writing poetry in high school. He also developed an appreciation for classical music when he played the trombone in middle school. In college he started performing spoken word poetry. As a multinational who spent ten developmental years in Texas, Theophilus gravitated to hip-hop and rap first to validate his Blackness in a white American experience. But, he came to actually appreciate the music in the process. Theophilus wrote and performed his first rap to a beat in 2020 when he proposed to his then-girlfriend MorganEva.

Their sound is a blend of the steady groovy pulse of Hip-Hop, the salient thud of Dance-Pop, the slurring synths of EDM and the experiential chords of R&B, Blues and Gospel. 

teoemmy’s lyrics are centered around lessons learned about life, growth, emotion, love, and forgiveness in the context of relationships with others and relationship with Jesus.

As artists and lovers, they share a genuine, reliable, and true friendship that translates to a genuine, reliable, and true partnership. teoemmy is the musical representation of that friendship.
