Leviata is the result of the latest project by tapeweaver Mattias Lagerkvist, who’s foray in to delayed drenched guitar and drone compositions under the name Ekolali has echoed for over a decade.

However, this release splits the echo with a major shift in both approach and sound.
A guttural declaration of throbbing bass lines and hypnotic melodies, pulsating drones and primal screeches is accompanied by field recordings and chaotic percussion. Mangled by broken tape delays, ground hum and a four track held together with gaffa tape, Leviata is like a road trip to Eleusis; it shakes, rumbles, squeaks and squeals.

Previously making his home on labels such as Not Not Fun, BAKK, Patience and Constellation Tatsu, Leviata sees his own 20 year old label being brought back to life.

Find yourself a place to hide, the primordial soup is back for revenge.

Last year, under the moniker Murkla, Mattias Lagerkvist aka Ekolali took a more aggressive and fantasian approach to the repetitive style he's been carving out for himself over the last decade.  Despite the overall kosmische sound, and the absence of both of guitar and vocals, Leviata became something of a mirror, reflecting his roots in the 90s metal and hardcore scene of far north Sweden.

But now, in the wake of the sea serpent, with an album two years in the making, Mattias emerge once again as Ekolali.

Like trapped on the tracks of a merry-go-round, this freight-train of sound circles a lush landscape of pulsating drones and swathes of white noise. With it's arpeggiated guitar-licks and melodic bongo-like bass and drums as it's underframe, For Why You Happy takes you on an ouroboric ride of joy.

No seats, no belts, just hold on as it's chomping to chug.

I really like “2013.06.01 (jam 1.6.13 mrk4 total)”, and have been trying to make it in to something proper for years.

Genom Grundet is the latest outing by Swedish analogue explorer Ekolali, the inaugural release on new imprint Patience. 

A pulsing, entrancing study in sustain and release that washes over in ecstatic waves throughout it’s 35 minute duration, Genom Grundet is a shimmering summation of Ekolali’s approach and an auspicious blueprint for the virgin NYC-based label. 

Recorded on a modest setup at his almost-off-grid compound in rural Möljeryd, Sweden, Genom Grundent (Through The Shallows) gently bubbles with a sampled stream, baked tape delay, droning broken organ and pitch-shifted rhythm, blooming with vocoder chants and klassic kosmische guitar as the track unfolds. 

Repetitive to the point of rapture, Genom Grundet reveals it’s wonders over repeat meditations. 

Mattias Lagerkvist has previously issued similarly potent musical balms as Ekolali via Bakk and Not Not Fun. 

Patience is a new outlet for artists to explore ideas further and longer than they otherwise might imagine. Inspired by music perpetually on rotation at HQ – with E2-E4 representing the format’s high tide mark – each release will be one artist’s deep dive down one inspirational wormhole - or two different interpretations thereof - spread across two sides of vinyl. 

Set and forget, zone out and tune in.
