In MetS, activated leukocytes, including neutrophils, are the major sources of ROS in the circulation. Several fundamental questions, however, remain, such as whether or not neutrophils directly (transiently or permanently) interact with the luminal aspect of coronary arterial endothelium and to what extent this interaction contributes to the development of ROS-mediated endothelial dysfunction. The current study by Hutcheson et al. (10) in this issue of the American Journal of Physiology-Heart and Circulatory Physiology provides a new aspect of impaired collateral growth in MetS. Key results from this study show that because of the inadequate apoptosis and consequent accumulation of neutrophils within the arterial lumen, the outward luminal expansion of coronary collateral vessels is greatly diminished in the J. C. Russel (JCR) rat, a rodent model of MetS. It has been long recognized that monocytes and neutrophils comprise the main inflammatory cell population, which transiently increases during the collateral vessel growth (12). The study by Hutcheson et al. demonstrates that in the JCR rats the infiltrating inflammatory cells are predominantly neutrophils with only very little involvement of monocytes. More importantly, neutrophils in the JCR rats tend to accumulate and persist in the lumen of small collateral vessels. The first Blight devastated the Tevinter Imperium. Not only had the darkspawn ravaged the countryside, but Tevinter citizens had to face the fact that their own gods had turned against them. Dumat, the Old God once known as the Dragon of Silence, had risen to silence the world, and despite the frenzied pleas for help, the other Old Gods did nothing. The people of the Imperium began to question their faith, murdering priests and burning temples to punish their gods for not returning to help.


In these dark times, mankind scrambled for a light, any light. Some found comfort in demonic cults that promised power and riches in return for worship. Others prayed to the Old Gods for forgiveness, begging the great dragons to return to the world. Still others fell so low as to worship the darkspawn, forming vile cults dedicated to the exaltation of evil in its purest form. It is said that the world wept as its people begged for a savior who would not come.

They believed in two gods ofdifferent trade, if I may say so, who caused, theone good, and the other evil. They called thefirst God by excellence, and the second Demon."
