I will probably come back to this for a remastering, though. Particularly with the filter. But hey, it's good to be back! :D

In all seriousness, this is a cover of the Rockmen Battle theme from FTL on four trombones, but because I can't play four trombones at once, I had to overdub it and arrange it on GarageBand for iOS. Admittedly I cheated a little by recording each section of the tune separately rather than as four continuous tracks and by playing the quick quaver (eigths) line with two trombones playing alternate notes, but hey, it does the job! Also if you're wondering what the clicking is, it's my slightly crappy trombone plug which allows me to play very low but clicks when you press it. It makes quite good sort-of drums though!

FTL - Rockmen (Battle) Trombone Cover

Can you feel the Splatoon vibes tonight?
It's the Rhythmicorn OST! All this music was composed during the weekend of the Global Game Jam 2018 with just recorded sounds messed with in Sunvox. This was my third attempt at composing music for a unicorn-themed rhythm game, and absolutely my best - if anything this jam taught me that simplicity was key to making tracks like these, as my first two attempts were complex and sounded a bit creepy - not ideal for unicorns!

So, the sounds. The chime sound (the main instrument) is the sound of hitting a glass stretched into a note and the chord sound is a bleep from a pay and display machine also stretched (which some might argue is cheating because electronic devices like that tend to emit a square wave which is a boring instrument, but shhh there's like noise in the sample and everything). The percussion is made from various sounds (a twig snapping, some staggered claps, loud footsteps), and the piano is a recording of an Actual Real Life Piano™. Oh, and there's a squid voice.

The squid voice is probably the coolest sound to come out of the weekend (second place is taken by a robot stomp sound effect made by stomping on a pizza box and lowering its pitch). It was made by recording my own voice (which is irritatingly a bit low for this task), pitching it up an octave or two, removing all bass from it and applying a wah wah filter (hence the title). So now you can squidify your own voice, and truly be a squid rather than a kid.

The first section was deliberately long to give time for a tutorial, but I don't think there was time for that in the end. Either way, was a nice way to introduce the first level. The piano middle section came about after my previous attempt had a really neat piano section in the middle, so the obviously sensible plan was to use that kind of transition EVERYWHERE. Also I got the highest complement of "argh I hate you the tune is stuck in my head" which is the best.

But yeah, exciting! I'd definitely recommend making music only with recorded sounds, you can make some really cool instruments and it gives you an excuse to walk around for a bit recording sounds, which is always nice. And sometimes you accidentally make the sound of hell. "oh, I forgot about hell" - Finnbar Keating, 2k18.

It's the Rhythmicorn OST! All this music was composed during the weekend of the Global Game Jam 2018 with just recorded sounds messed with in Sunvox. This was my second attempt at composing music for a unicorn-themed rhythm game, and my lack of practice composing for a theme kind of shows because it manages to be a bit creepy while trying to be playful. But it worked out in the end because it turns out the game gets darker as our unicorn friend travels further into the city, so that accidentally worked well.

Let's talk about Mother 3 for a moment! It has a really cool feature where during a melee attack you can tap along to the beat to get more hits and do more damage (and possibly even have people cheer at you if you hit the magic number 16). You might be thinking "ah, I can tap along to a few beats, what can possibly go wrong" and then it's in a time signature like Even Drier Guys' 6/8 + 3/4 or even Strong One (Masked Man) and its terrifying 29/16. Good luck tapping to that. Anyway, I think game music, especially rhythm game music, in odd time signatures is excellent so this is in 6/8 + 3/4. Also it had a cool extra thing where if you sent an enemy to sleep you'd hear its heartbeat which is exactly the beat you need to tap out so it'd be easier to combo but I digress

The drop into the piano is perhaps my favourite bit of composition from the weekend, because it manages to keep the energy going and in my friend's words "sounds like it's from a gen 3 Pokémon game" (also the highest complement). Think Mt Pyre Peak and the like. It was also quite cool filtering the piano during part of the first time the tune plays - Disasterpeace mentioned this in the notes to his piano album Disasters for Piano, and I thought it was a good idea so had some fun with it.

But yeah, exciting times! Not much extra to say other than I had fun with this and I hope you enjoy it too!
