Silk Road has birthed a lot of light hearted energy and enjoyment from everyone listening to it around the world. But the energy in the Armenian community has been so heavy over the past year with the perpetuation of cultural erasure. This is not only at the genocidal hands of Azerbaijan and Turkey but also within Armenia’s own government. Darone and I have both felt a lot of weight with the Silk Road release to use it as a platform to lift up the Armenian people’s voice. Through our conversation here, I hope to share with our audience Darone's thoughts on what will deepen understanding of the current state of Armenia in 2022 and how the events of 2020 set this dark shift in Armenian history.

Jared McKay is half of the Miami based exploration initiative Coral Morphologic. For the past 15 years Jared and Colin Foord have studied the forms of marine invertebrates and reflected that through a symbiosis of science and the arts. They grow and film coral in their lab. Utilizing their cutting edge footage and manipulating time to open our perspective of marine biology. By speeding up these processes before our eyes, these sedentary creatures come to life, moving and engaging with their environment. While their lab work provides incredible insight, their work extends to the natural environment off Miami’s shores as well as the intersection of urban development and the sea. Seeing how coral adapts to the ever expanding artificial structures of the city provides a unique view of the future and how coral may pioneer as we continue to encroach on marine habitats. 

We recently released Jared’s album Coral Morphologic 1 which serves as a magical accompaniment to visions of an underwater world. The sound he’s developed as a musician truly reflects the sea. It’s almost as if he’s captured the language of coral.

[TF012] System Exclusive - Summertime EP (preview)

Our first release is a reissue of the ultra rare Miami funk LP, Lang Cook's 'She's Hot With 2,000 Watt's'. We've been working closely with Lang on this release and aside from officially licensing the music, we've produced both a music video and full length interview with Lang Cook, the original guitarist Teddy Studstill, Miami soul legend Willie Clarke, and Andrew 'Le Spam' Yeomanson. The album is Lang's sole body of work, only preceded by a 7" single of one of the included tracks 'Chocolate Stuff'. The synth heavy record was certainly ahead of it's time. Miami's own TK Records turned down the release and when Lang's girlfriend at the time, Bo Griffin, played 'Chocolate Stuff' on WEDR, the station's manger busted in asking "What is this chocolate shit?!" A deeply passionate musician, Lang poured his heart and soul out through his own vocals, the Fender Rhodes, Roland SH-2000, bass, and guitar. On the majority of the tracks he played and overdubbed every instrument but the drums. This individual expression is clear throughout the album as Lang lends a unique style and approach to the recording process. The only track that really takes in another voice is 'Chocolate Stuff' which had it's disco ecstasy guided by the wise mind of guitarist Teddy Studstill. We're so grateful to have the opportunity to found our label on this fantastic music as it guides us to a slew of exciting releases ahead.

[TF001] Lang Cook - She's Hot With 2,000 Watts (full album)

Terrestrial Funk's second release takes us across the Atlantic Ocean from Miami, Florida to the shores of Accra, Ghana. We welcome Ghanian legends Pat Thomas & Ebo Taylor with a reissue of their 1984 self-titled album.  As spiritual as it is danceable, the LP has been hidden in obscurity compared to the duos other records, yet houses some of their deepest cuts. Pat's voice and Ebo's guitar have earned them widely successful solo careers that continue to give. Here their instruments meet as the heart and soul of Ghana.

Terrestrial Funk's third release brings us back to our home state of Florida. Traveling time to the year 1979 we find ourselves on the Gulf Coast in a city called Sarasota. Sal Garcia leads Omni, the resident band at the Columbia,  a Spanish restaurant operating in the city since the turn of the century. Sal and his band look to record a single ironically called Disco Sucks but the restaurant isn't willing to fund a record with the word 'sucks' in it, so the band changes the track title to 'Disco Socks'. The song is a disco odyssey with driving drums, ethereal flutes, playful lyrics, and a synth solo for the gods. On the b side there's a little latin number called 'Sarasota (Que Bueno Esta)'. An ode to their city, the song praises Sarasota for its beautiful women and precious beaches. Sal is still living his dream playing at piano bars in the city. He was kind enough to work with us on this release and we're grateful to share more Florida music with the world.

Terrestrial Funk’s sixth release explores over a decade of Armenian disco, funk, and soul. Compiled by Darone Sassounian who spent three years tracking down the records and artists; fulfilling a calling to lift his people’s voice, a people that have always faced the threat of erasure. The music was made a generation after the Armenian Genocide, a testament to perseverance. The seven tracks featured are incredibly inventive and unique in their interpretations of these Western seventies sounds. This compilation comes at an urgent time as 2020 set the stage for Azerbaijan and Turkey to perpetuate genocidal rhetoric as they invaded Armenian borders and bombed civilian cities eventually resulting in the loss of lives and land stewarded for millennia. All while the western world paid little notice. It is with great gratitude and purpose that Terrestrial Funk rebirths this music and uplifts the voice of the Armenian Diaspora.
