An homage to the northwoods region of Michigan's beautiful and wild Upper Peninsula, and how it calls to me, even in my dreams.  It riffs on two Canadian folk songs, Land of the Silver Birch, and My Paddle's Keen and Bright.

I Don't Need To Write You A Song

The photo is of my paternal grandmother, Audrey Findell, who I never met because she died when my father was just a boy.  I've often wondered about this photo, taken around 1920  - why was she standing at the mailbox of the family farm, dressed to the nines, holding a banjo ukulele?   I created the back story and put it into a song.  I sing it from the voice of the mail carrier who might have served this rural farm route,  perhaps called Rum River RFD. That's How We Roll

This is a traditional Ojibwe song that was sung when the children were going to bed.  It was sung to encourage the children to be quiet and still, and not to attract the attention of the Great White Owl.  It was collected in the 1940s by ethnomusicologist Gertrude Prokosch Kurath.

So Long

Bagizo means Go Swimming in the Ojibwa, or Chippewa language.  This guitar duet was written after we watched a moose swim across Duncan Bay when I was an Artist in Residence at Isle Royale National Park.  Hope you like it!

Aurora

A beautiful parable, claimed by some to be of Native American origin.  I took the tale, spun it my way, and set it to music.  Recorded on a rocky Lake Superior beach near Little Marais, Minnesota, with my I Pad (you'll hear the waves).
