Like the pages of an intriguing storybook, Terry Penney’s latest record, The last Guitar offers up tale after compelling tale of ageless matters set in simpler times.
      Crystal clear recollections of childhood getaways, scenic snapshots of abandoned countryside churches, and vivid vignettes of haunted war veterans and ill-fated highwaymen are all exposed as the album unfolds.
      The Last Guitar is Penney’s fifth and finest release since his recording career commenced in 1998.
      This offering is an acoustic affair featuring some of the most talented players around, including multi-instrumentalist Craig Young who also shares producing credits with Penney.
     In many ways this newest CD is a sister record to 2009’s Town That Time Forgot.  Indeed The Last Guitar treads similar ground as its predecessor, serving up stories of picturesque communities and the people who reside there.  This album however, is a much more focused effort than anything he has previously committed to tape.
      The rootsy, “nitty gritty” instrumentation and production serve as perfect backdrops to Penney’s rustic lyrical scenarios.
      His songs have always been insightful, thought-provoking pieces that resonate with the listener long after the music has stopped.
     This collection is no exception.  Penney’s pen, ever dripping sepia tone, seems to never waste a word and has turned out another batch of panoramic gems to add to his ever growing body of work.
