Temperature's Rising (The Seas Do Too)

Based on Laurent's (Wypernet) instrumental piece called Nature Humain (https://soundcloud.com/wypernet/nature-humaine-instrumental), this is a brief lyrical and vocal interaction with his ideas. Mood is everything for a vocalist reacting to the sounds, and that mood was set by Laurent with his guitar, bass and percussion backing track.  I added the synths in the instrumental, the rain  f/x, and the final mix with the additional parts.  Thanks to Laurent for letting me interact with his musical ideas.

Doesn't Matter

A little foray into the world of choral performance. My own musical experience involved several years touring as a member of a Chorale at the seminary I was attending. I have always enjoyed choirs and smaller vocal ensembles. So, every once in a while, I get a song that leads back to choirs and big endings with the choir swaying and clapping. In memory of a fine jazz musician, Master Peo. This  collaboration was the result of Peo suggesting I might write a lyric and vocal for his instrumental idea. We discovered each other's music on mp3u.com and created several recordings over the past few years. His desire to record old style big band as well as small ensemble jazz pieces never ceased to amaze and delight my ears. I do miss his quiet and steady presence and suggestions in countless e-mails.  Thanks for all the lessons in Jazz, Peo! (We disagreed with the finger snaps I accidentally caught in the mic in with my vocal in this song,  but I couldn't help myself so he let me keep them in ;)

The tipping point for me was last week when a small crowd gathered in Dallas, Texas, to welcome the return (like Jesus on a white horse?) of JFK and JFK Jr. who were going to restore Trump to power.
There is just so much WTF stuff that I can take before it has to come out in a rant.
I used layered vocals (pitch-shifted and filtered) to express this as a demonic vocal since one of the main allegations against the left seems to be the claim that they are evil .

I've Got The Power

A look at the old photographs of my youngest brought a lot of images to mind, as vivid as being there. Living in the joy of the moment is a challenge when life is busy, but taking a breath and sitting back and being able to smile at all the spilled milk of life is where wellness abides.

This little ditty is really a celebration of the simple things in Nature, and all around us, from the sun in the sky, to the rain, to flowers and gardens and an impressionist view of colour and light. All these things bring smiles and the sense of euphoria (flying) that just being alive, breathing, and enjoying life causes to stir.

Here's to little children, growing up too fast, and all the tea parties enjoyed along the way to adulthood. The best investment in life is investing in our kids.

Cats Meow

This one came about in a little different way, for us. Keith had a poem on Spring that served as the impetus for the collaboration. Spring in my part of Canada can be more like an extended winter, never quite letting go. Keith's poem reflected that idea and the challenge was to create music and melody that would take his words to another level, etched into a musical idea. At least, that was the idea. A post Ground Hog Day lament for the slow-moving spring.

An Easter message? Music against war?All wars are wrought with inhuman threads of unwarranted violence and destruction whether in Libya, Yemen, Lebanon, Afghanistan, Congo or... (place any name of any war at any time in history).
In this one, a special military pox upon Putin and his house and all those who abuse and terrorize innocents and rain destruction upon all those who simply want to live and to exist. Justice? Where? ICC - we hope you're leading the charge for justice, and NATO, EU, UN - don't look away!

Look Away

80s electronic? Andrew Shields, who posted music under the name DNA Codex,  is a visual artist, spiritual ponderer and music creator. I came across his musical style on mp3u and we've  created a few pieces of music and message collaborations. Sun on Stones is an example of the way we combined ideas about the significance of ancient stones, from Stonehenge to Easter Island to Golbeklitepe. What does it mean to us as we soar into space and reach for the very stars that the ancients worshiped? You'll find no answers here, only exploration.  It is fun to dream of possibilities, and entertain mystical and spiritual significance of the ancients.

At a time when violence and war is threatening the very existence Ukraine, there is a need to find hope and grasp dreams of transcendence.

We're not saying anyone should give up, but don't forget all the joy along the way to the elusive, "one day" that may or may not be in the cards for any of us.
And as we ponder life from the street view of a frustrated songwriter, think of all the "one days" that so many in Ukraine will never have, just to keep it all in perspective.

An after Christmas Freudian analysis that some people never grow up -  the toys simply become bigger and more expensive! ;)

I was sent a bass phrase with a nice reggae beat, a little keyboard to punctuate the rhythm, and a few other sounds. The vibe was catchy, and melody and lyrics started flowing. A little of this and a little of that, rounded out with an editing process that ended up with this mix.

The message is a simple observation that all the "No!" messages of childhood, may lead to something later in life. We all need toys, but when you grow up (if you grow up), the kinds of things that attract us may be...a little different.

Notes:
Black Park: all the electronica and tambourines in the backing track, harmony vocals in the chorus, all the cutting and pasting of my mic'd parts, mixing and production.
Me: Guitars (mic'd Norman acoustic with some f/x), Lyrics (perhaps I was that frustrated youth?:) and vocals - additional fun utterances as well as the lead vocal.

I've always enjoyed the Alien movies.The first, to my thinking, was the best. And I've wanted to write a song that could be used in a Sci-Fi film, something quirky and alluding to the double entendre of being eaten by a literal something or by the thoughts and anxieties or fears of something. This one fit the bill. Set to some snappy guitar parts and bass that Keith had sent to Kevin and I, wanting some direction. When we feel the energy, it all gels so quickly. I placed drums, and a vocal idea and  sent it back to him, by the time we had worked this idea over, it had grown into something quite... well...alien. What's eating you?

Keith was dabbling with a small keyboard. A little melody flowed.  It all flowed from there. Sometimes the simple beginnings inspire some deep thoughts. Choices always intrigue me - variations on the theme of "should I stay or should I go?" How do you weigh that decision in a relationship? The answer is in the title - when you come to the uncomfortable awareness that there is nothing special to keep you, so Nothing Special is left behind.

A little scary motif for Halloween?  Naw, just a little musing on a scary theme in a relationship - the idea that one of the parties feels, neglected, ignored and invisible. 
*note: this one began as a lyrical and melodic idea for a different style (electronic pop-ish sort of) for another artist, but when that idea didn't work out, I thought it was just a matter of finding the right style and backing. Sure enough, Ray came along and developed a sweet little jazzy, RnB flavoured idea and the lyrics found a new home. Life is about resilience and keeping on going despite doors that appear to be closing.

Based on Wypernet's (Laurent) song, and with his permission, I've posted this to my page on SC. The song emerged as an exploration and exhortation. If you feel as though you are going through the motions of life, and it's understandable in the age of Covid 19, it's time to change things up. Where's the red pill from the Matrix? (is the red pill the vaccine? Or is it a mask that some people choose not to wear? Or are these just what gets us past the pandemic...then what?). The Red Pill may be the simple awareness of others' needs and thinking of others first. Self-less, rather than self-ish. Other -centered, not self-centered. Community rights, rather than individual rights.
