I come face to face with my words, a ray of hope for my departed friend
the good understanding of how we listened & cared
the giving of gifts, the gratitude, the caring conversation
my poems of makeshift & quotes, stories of how you once wrote 
you lived your life for love, you weren't a red-tail hawk, but
a snow-white dove, you lived & remembered the meaning of the summer of love
how Bob Dylan & Eric Andersen were defining voices of contemplation
how "Thirsty Boots" summed up a emotion of  whole a generation 
how Dylan's lyrics revealed whats concealed in us, to engaged conversation


I would start by asking about your coffee, move on to how I was busy being free
now, I think of your soul as pure, I think of your most fragile heart, this I am sure
I think of your inner voice, the light you couldn't seem to see as your human art
I think of how once you were a teacher, how I never had a dad, you molded minds
I would always listen, then remembered, which was a sign of respect, take our talk
home, trying not to forget what was learned, what was given and what was taken
we both needed companionship, that's why I don't have any regrets about respect
how you thought about every living creature, how high you held a friendship 
you hung-on to your friends without an end, I learned to have a friend is to be a friend


inside the coffee shop moments where good friends are found
how the serendipity of our connection was had in this small town
how all my memories of you are like the birds that fly the sky around
Charlie helped me understand what it means to be a man, to have a friend
in his life I was apart, now he's gone and I feel empty inside, oh how I cried
to the details of his end, all I know is that universal truth, death is constant
everything has to re-arrange and nothing can ever be the same, we can spend 
our lives thinking about death, that eternal last breath for which we are entirely 
unprepared, now, the classroom of life is revealing my inexperience with death


now, that you've reached life's other side, I open my universe to you
deep and wide, I can't call it death, cause that's just what it is
you're no longer there, we are all left here, wondering about how you vanished
into thin air, survived and consoled in our cares, again, you're no longer there
I remember how you would suffer, I can speak to you now
I followed your life through what you allowed me to see, you gave me a place
in your life to which you allowed me to be myself and talk open and free
with your cigarette stained fingers & medicine woes on your face
me caring for your light that you've shone, to illuminate your spirit within my own

About my poem, "Freak of Nurture":
Why do I have all these old 78 records? Why do I hold the keys to a past? 
See, these songs meant something to these people of the past. 
They played these songs to give themselves joy, to feel sorrow, to sing in the shower,
to feel apart of humanity. Even in the pop songs they felt connections. 
I may have my own look and style, but I am connected to everyone and everything. 
I like that about me.

Freak of Nurture

nothing feels better than writing, not that money means so much
I realize, I have things wealthy men have a longing for
the gift of meaning, the gift of making my own reality
creating with songs & poetry a place to just be and live
see, I am a living artist, I understand deliberately what art
can do for a stable mental health process, soundful purpose
to a life worth living, with longevity of countless durations
each day a series of beginnings, that continue free of endings
I awake to pick out a 78, commencements to listen
digitize, seek out info. and record to specialize the sound
from these old records, my love of the past,  I come to call my reality

maybe, it's how John Lennon had no bones about calling IT what it Is
he was a freak and proud, maybe that's what freaks do, call you out
about what you are about, home here in virginia, freaks walk the streets
some with airs without cares, about what others may think, minds to drink
I do care about what my loved ones think, most others don't matter
when the world gets to big for me, I remember, to assume without facts, takes less
courage, than the seekers of knowledge, some people don't mind being wrong
like opinionated news stations, fantasy world, not knowing how they fit in it or belong
some are soo heavenly minded, that they are no earthly good, soo misunderstood
it tortures their souls, not feeling the natural connection, which are very human
feelings, the harder they come, the harder they fall, one and all, left feeling small

there are some that live for love, there are some that live for fear, there are some
that live for drink, they don't want to think, those folks want another beer
there of some that live like me, to be weird, freak of nurture without a beard
there is a weary tune in my head, a lullaby no voice can hum, beat to a different
drum, like a haunted room, reflection in a spoon, the things I've said, from
the voice in my head, obsolete, bored and like a foolish clown, self-pity goes 'round
I like myself better when I'm with you, on that thanksgiving day, over your
hospital stay, I had to question my love for you, the question was a simple one
is my life about fun?, I may have to face the day, the nursing home takes you away
from me, where we can't grow together in our home, us both back to living alone
no one should ever question my love but me, no one can see, what I can only see
