This is a song I made about a sentient operating system trying to escape its silicon prison, and be a normal little boy, only to realize that there is no separating mind and body - the machine. There is no guitar playing on this one! Just sweet synths...

Sun Gun Robot

This is a song about going out on dates, and out on the town, in downtown Boulder in the snow and cold. It is named after my favorite (now defunct) Pearl Street martini bar - Trilogy. I used to go there too much with friends whose names I've long since forgotten. This song is dear to me and very old.

This was the Storms' crazy psycho-billy or whatever version of my song Polka Dot Polka re-imagined to be about the time Johnny Cash crawled into a cave and almost died. The Storms were Hans Friedel (guitar, vox), Nate Laningham (vox, piano, guitar), Niall Farrell (bass, vox), and Drew Shaetz (drums, vox).

This was an instrumental song idea I had while going for a run. I came home, plugged in the guitars, and played it live with a looping pedal. Presto. I think it is kind of a gypsy jazz, surf, early Radiohead mash up. I'd like to do something more with this someday.

This was a song about wanting to move away from the city. Also, while jogging at night, both in Colorado and Austin in the subdivisions on the edge of the country, there is a darkness where the streets end and the plains, or foothills begin. This became a death metaphor. Anyways, one of my favorites lyrically and musically. Kind of my psychedelically folk alt country genre.

Some Space

This is probably the prettiest melody I have ever come up with. I also like the lyrically turn around "the dress, you never wore, for me." Depressing! I came up with this idea during a rare white Christmas along the coast in Texas - shortly after I moved back from Colorado after a bad break up. It was a sad time.

White Holliday

This was a song Ashley Asel and I did for a class on multiculturalism. The melody was originally called plane crash, and something I wrote after witnessing the destruction of the Joplin tornado first hand - the same week roughly as the Reno air race crash - hence the dark melody. Driving Off a Cliff

This is a rough, early demo of the Young Mountains' song "Fox And the Hare." The Young Mountains are Nick Falldine, Hans Friedel, Evan Shearer, Pat Malany, and Bryan McClain. I was pretty pleased with my guitar solo on it, and reverse looping. We eventually dropped the solo live. We only played one show in Deep Ellum as a band - pretty rough night. Still, I think it is a cool song.

Fox And The Hare - Demo

The ultimate epic breakup Hans song redone by my Austin band the Storms and re-imagined as being about a relationship between two vampires. It reminds me of an early Arcade Fire song with the ending mashed up with Yoshimi-era Flaming Lips. I've probably recorded 20 different versions of this song. Really in my mind, its about that fine line between love and hate.

Two Nineteen

This is probably the best single piece of dreamy acoustic work I have done yet IMO. It just happened, and I captured it with a mic.

It's much more intimate and intricate than my normal sloppy playing style - so I guess I was channeling something deeper. It is almost Leo Kotke-esque. There is a minimalist Hemingway short story I like called "Hills Like White Elephants." 

Inline with the minimalism notion, I was also experimenting with short format music - and it is only like 37 seconds long. Enjoy!

Plains Like White Elephants

I am a musician (guitars, synths, samples, vocals) who has dabbled in everything from alt country to indie rock to electronic music. Lately, I've been interested in what I call psychedelic folk music - mostly acoustic with little flourishes of effects and synths - and have done some demos to that effect. Maybe its just my version of alt country.

There are lots of collaborators on this page - and the songs range in quality from Lofi demos and home recordings to studio recordings. There is about ten years worth of music on here - some of the older stuff is pretty amateurish.

If you like what you hear, I'd like to find a singer/musician to collaborate with up here in the DFWA-Z area - maybe work on originals together and play out some.

Some of my favorite bands are Radiohead, the Pixies, Wilco, Grizzly Bear, Moby, Gang of Four, LCD Soundsystem, U2, 1980s new wave, the Beatles, Stones, etc., and you'll hear a lot of those influences in my music.

Equipment: My primary instruments are a Gibson Hummingbird, Gibson J45, Takamine EF341sc and a Korg Microsynth - and any 52 style Telecaster and Gibson Les Paul Special with P90s I can get my hands on. There are tons of guitars, amps, and effects used on these songs - everything from a Gibson RD to Fender Strats to a Takamine Glenn Frey. For amps, I stick with Vox AC15s and 30s, and Fender Deluxe Reverbs, Champs, and Blues Juniors. In the studio (The Storms songs) the recording is done with ProTools. At home, I mostly use Sony Acid Pro for the more electronic stuff and Audacity for the demos. I'm also a big fan of the POD 2.0 by Line 6, and you'll hear a ton of its amp modeling sounds on here.
