James wrote the first notes of this tune on a banjo loaned to him by a man called Dean. The instrument has long since returned to its owner, but its half-crazed, stabbing and sliding melody lives on.

Hosting of the Sidhe takes the eponymous poem by W. B. Yeats and weaves a musical picture of the irish poet's words. Sidhe or Aos Sí or celtic mythology are seductive sirens who dwell underground, dangerous and enchanting.

Banks of the Newfoundland tells the tale of the passage from these Isles to America before the age of steam in old packet and convict ships. Our arrangement expands upon a version sung by John Farr of Gwithian, west Cornwall in the 1920s.

Formed from two of Dominic’s tunes, the first is the eponymous ‘Badge’, which quite simply is an anagram of the tune’s notes: B, A, G, D and E. The second is a fast reel called ‘Crash Helmet’. Both have a pentatonic structure that allows great freedom for harmonic wandering.

Travelling through Ireland in late summer we stopped off in Fermanagh, lake county, for a house concert in the kitchen of Maggie and Stephen Muldoon. Aside from being wonderful humans they are also lovers of music and words. This song grew from the kernel of Stephen’s beautiful poetry, in particular, a set of five stanzas about growth and memory.

In TEYR’s hands the song speaks to a new generation of global strangers.

Folk trio TEYR evolved out of London’s thriving session scene, combining bothy ballads, focsle shanties, folk tunes and Irish poetry. Their unique blend of voices and instruments draws links between the many sounds of the Celtic and British isles. Featuring close vocal harmonies, fiddle, uilleann pipes, guitar, low whistle and accordion, and influenced by the great folk musicians who've come before, TEYR (‘3’ in the Cornish language) have honed their craft and thrive on weaving their diverse threads together.

Their acclaimed debut release Far From The Tree is a distillation of two years of playing, writing and wrangling.
