Early House days

This mix describes my clumsy rise from a hopeful amateur to a recognised pro in the early 1990’s DJ scene.

It was a hard slog to get myself known in the sydney clubs in 1991-93. The circuit was ‘sewn-up’ and saturated with really phenomenal DJ’s. I had my work cut out for me.

I knew I had a real ‘emo’ context behind the music I played, and I would visit venues, get into the ‘mosh-pit’ and see from within how the crowd responded to rhythm and tone. But more importantly, I experienced the real “feeling” of inclusivity and freedom of being a part of a movement.

So I would spend hours at home in my DJ studio, re-creating some of the sounds I experienced on the floor at many Sydney venues - DCM, Kinsellas, the Shift, Goodbar,  and many others.

I won a DJ competition at Annie’s bar in 1991 and was offered a set at the Albury Hotel. I was talent-scouted to play at Blackmarket and DCM in 1993. Clumsy at first, but once I found my feet, I soon let loose with my ‘emo’-house style. I made it a point to create a mood, and lead my clientele towards a FEELING by carefully selecting harmonic keys and rhythms. 

Everyone loved my music, yet very few people knew my name. I deliberately encouraged that. I wasn’t looking for fame; I just liked doing what I was doing and making people happy.

I could have taken my career further, but due to some rather unfortunate family circumstances, I let it all burn down shortly after 1996.

In 2017, I teamed up with a wealthy business partner to set up the “World Peace” series of exclusive dance parties. It was fun, and I learned a lot about wealth and extravagance, although I’m pretty glad I’m not part of that scenario any more.

These days I live on a small rural farm in a very remote part of the country. I sometimes wish I was a part of the glitz and excitement of the 1990’s / 2010’s, but now that I know what’s on the horizon, I’m okay with growing food and fixing things…

I have stories to tell my grandkids, and I’m ok with that.
