Moving to Logic from Garageband has opened up a whole new world of realistic sounds for me to play and experiment with. This was a fun little experiment featuring bass guitars by Native Instruments.

Better Luck Next Time (v07)

An early experiment with playing guitar in GB. During the time I wrote this, I was at war with the carpenter bees tormenting my patio. Unintentionally, the song has a swarming kinda sound in the background.

Kady Pooh

Around the time I created this piece, I'd acquired a virtual cello that was pretty impressive sounding - - although a bit unpredictable in how it played. This song features a bit of that instrument during the quiet parts. Not bad; could be better.

This track was also one of my several experiments in playing the virtual bass instrument. (I have a famous funk bass player in my family, for whom I have a lot of reverence. So whenever I use the instrument in my songs, it's very intentional, and a bit in-your-face!)

The Other Way Around (v01)

"The Spark" is one of my more labored compositions—but the outcome was worth it. From time to time, in the creation process, the point of a song becomes not so much the structure or instrumentation, but just the music itself. The pure joy of playing, and hearing what it sounds like as you play. That's a magical experience. Hence the song name, I suppose.

Also, the song's title is a nod to Herbie Hancock and the Headhunters. His music has been a big influence on mine...

Headhunter (v19)

This song originated as freestyle “piano jam.” But with a little love and attention, it was transformed into something a bit more structured and melodic. 

Along the way, the piano was slightly tweaked and/or replayed, here and there—no longer a true “freestyle” performance. But realizing (and loving) that the main characteristic of the piano is its spontaneous vibe, I was careful to keep as much of the original playing as intact as possible.

Around 2:10, a very subtle, somewhat timid bass kicks in, and reappears in time to help close out the song. On a track this laidback and contemplative in mood, that’s as much work as a bassline needs to do.

Freestyle 2 (v08)

"Music is an energy source. It's everything the body needs. When we run out of fuel for the car, or electricity for the dishwasher...we just make new music. So what do you say? Can we do this? Should we do this? Hell yeah, we should definitely do this. We should definitely do this! We should definitely do this!! So let's go..." 

This song is a nod to dystopian, sci-fi movies like The Matrix, Mad Max, and Book of Eli. But there's nothing fictional about the power of Music to energize one's soul. Be well...

Energy Source (v21)

This track was originally created in 2016 and has since undergone 18 versions. That many iterations usually means one of two things: 1) I've loved futzing with the song so much that I just can't put it down, or 2) I can never get it to sound quite like what's in my head, so I keep trying to make it better. In the case of this song, it's a bit of both. Some songs are a blessing *and* a curse...

Pasajero (v18, master)

In 2018, I collaborated with my friend Kevin—who, like me, is an avid Garageband enthusiast. We had fun trading GB files back and forth, each person rearranging and/or adding to the music until we both agreed the song was “perfect.” Although, we’re both busy guys, so we didn’t exactly have time to obsess over anything—and that spontaneity was part of the fun.

(For any lone music creators out there, I wholeheartedly recommend collaborating with a friend—whether live or online—with whom you share mutual respect of each other’s sound. It’s fun, and it helps keep your creativity fresh.)

One side-gem that resulted was this quick and dirty piece that I created in Logic, based on the processed vocal sample heard looping throughout the song. The vocal sample (“Get your booty wicky”—don’t ask me what it means!) is from an original song by Kevin. The loop used throughout this track is lifted from our GB collaboration based on Kevin’s song—which explains why it has an overly-processed sound. The rest of the track is me being silly and funky. Booty Wicky (v08)

I'm not a professional musician, but I love creating "GarageBand art." (Although these days, I've graduated to Logic.) Most of my compositions are short experiments or demos, and ideally geared toward commercial use, such as movie/TV soundtracks, commercials, and multimedia. These days, my typical sound is laid-back and jazz-inspired; although in the past, its been more dramatic and cinematic. Many of my longer compositions are a mix of both.
