On 26 June 2024, Bristol-based contemporary folk project Fritillaries will release Thank God I Have The Songs (Cuculi Records), launching a new era for songwriter Hannah Pawson as a solo artist. Following widespread praise for her self-titled debut album in 2022, including Folk Radio’s Album of the Month and a nomination for FATEA’s Debut Album of the Year, this highly anticipated second release was recorded in collaboration with producer Rowan Elliott (Tamsin Elliott & Tarek Elazhary/Hands of the Heron) at The Roost in Bristol.

The Lightning

To "wake up in" a state that inherently lacks awareness (dreamless sleep) implies simultaneously being conscious (waking) and unconscious (dreamless sleep). This is a contradiction in literal terms, as one cannot logically be both aware (waking) and unaware (in dreamless sleep) at the same time.

2. The Walls of Jericho: Barriers to Progress

The Walls of Jericho, steeped in biblical symbolism, represent both systemic and self-imposed barriers that obstruct progress. These walls evoke the oppressive forces of war, political divides, and environmental degradation that persist despite our technological and cultural advancements.
In juxtaposition with "a world that’s good enough," they highlight the tension between complacency and striving for a better world. The walls symbolise the structures—economic, political, or ideological—that perpetuate inequality, exploitation, and inertia in the face of existential threats like climate collapse and global conflict.

3. The Rose of Jericho: Hope Amidst Adversity

The Rose of Jericho, a symbol of resilience and renewal, offers a fragile counterpoint to the oppressive walls. In a world grappling with ecological devastation, this imagery evokes the earth’s capacity for regeneration, even as human actions push its limits. Yet, "words crumbling to dust" warns of the fragility of hope when it remains unspoken or unacted upon.
The rose also speaks to the persistence of human connection and empathy, even in a time of widespread isolation. As loneliness and alienation grow in the modern world, the rose’s survival becomes a metaphor for the enduring strength of community and compassion, even when buried beneath layers of despair.

The 31 year old Jamaican 'Rapjay' has strong imagery and smooth lyrics in his delivery that creates an immediate connection with his listener, through a combination of hip-hop, complemented with strong tones of dancehall, reggae, and R&B. The rapper has already put out a handful of mixtapes, which has helped him earn a reputation of making "the most 'Jamaican' rap music".
