We’ve posted a lot of OVO-style auto-tune tracks (from SYD & MELB) lately: because artists repping these styles have had a little avalanche of hustle recently… not because we instantly froth anything with sub-bass and Drake hooks. So it goes without saying that we couldn’t be happier to premiere Cidi’s latest track - a refreshingly dope cut from the other end of the rap-spectrum/country.

Cidi, along with Lord Bravo, Dat Bul & Randolph make up one of Adelaide’s premiere new-wave crews. Those of you that didn’t catch their squad cut “Pull Up”, should definitely peep it asap - it’s one of my 2K16 favs. It sums up these guys perfectly too: low-key confidence, rawness and lyrical styles that haven’t reached their use-by date yet.

Cidi’s “Affirmative Action” is a great step-forward for all of these young rappers. This one has zero gimmicks. That timeless soul/boom-bap beat knows its place: in the background, placing all the pressure on Cidi to make-or-break the track off his lyrical ability alone. I get the feeling that he’s been eager to go all out for some time, show off all those flows he’s been mastering. 

The lyrics on this one are dope… “I keep it so real even Stevie Wonder can see it”. Full of pop-culture references, intelligent perspectives on the industry and Cidi’s unfiltered thoughts/feelings.

Hip-Hop has clearly helped Cidi, a talented young Sudanese-Australian, get through life in the ADL… now he’s returning the favour, making songs that the next generation might soon be bumping in their headphones to get them through the day.   Will def’s enjoy hearing his sound evolve in the coming months.
