A year and a half ago, That African approached Civillian with a challenge: to collaborate and create a “good” mix of current-era rap music. As long time purveyors of Golden-Era Hip-Hop™, they couldn’t ignore the infectious good vibe that exploded onto the dance floor when the DJ hit a stride in a set of good modern rap. As fans of quality hip-hop, they also couldn’t ignore how generic, corny, and generally bad a lot of it is.
Thus, they had their work cut out for them: to weed through the whack, and bring you only the finest of this new rap phenomenon.

Adult Lullabies

A long long time ago, I made a guest mix for the great (but now defunct) Vancouver music blog SKMB. Over the years it turned out to be many peoples favourite. It appears that recently the blog's Soundcloud account shut down and the mix disappeared. A few people messaged me to ask if I'd reupload it (thanks for the push!), so here it is! A rainy day in East Van

It's been a rough year all round. It's become cliche to say "these are the tunes that I can relax and zone out to" - but it's true. Known for diverse sounds and head nodding beats, That Anton will have you moving. Born in Cape Town, South Africa, and now a “Vancouver household name,” his musical style is full spectrum. Hip hop, trip hop, downtempo, reggae, house, world beats, and all manner of bass music are all in his repertoire. All of the above are blended skillfully and sprinkled with a healthy dose of turntablism. It’s easy listening for the discerning ear. From dance floors in forests (Shambhala, Bass Coast, Astral Harvest, Luminosity, and many more) to that mix that was playing at your favourite restaurant last night, That African’s style is always pleasing crowds.
