Étude in D-Sharp minor, Op. 8 No. 12 is an étude for piano composed by Alexander Scriabin in 1894. It features many technical challenges, including numerous jumps in the left hand, repetitive chord strikes, and abundant octaves. It is a particular favourite among pianists and audiences alike. One of his earlier Études, written when Scriabin was around the age of 23 the strong influence of Chopin on his early musical language can be heard quite clearly here - the rhythmical figure of the theme is seemingly a reference to the Chopin Étude of the same number (i.e. the Revolutionary Étude). Yet, even amongst all of the "Chopin" flavours heavy Russian influence which is distinctively Scriabin. There has been somewhat of a Scriabin revival over the last few decades, and appreciation for his musical output has been growing - something he truly deserves given this statement made about him: "No one was more famous during their lifetime, and few were more quickly ignored after death." Transcendental Étude No. 4 in D minor, "Mazeppa" is the fourth of twelve Transcendental Études by Franz Liszt. It was published in 1852 and is part of a much larger cultural legacy of Mazeppa. Lord Byron wrote an epic poem Mazeppa in 1818, but Liszt's Mazeppa is based upon a poem by Victor Hugo which published in 1829 as a part of a collection Les Orientales. MAZEPPA!!! The story of the Hetman and the Horse, and one of Liszt's most daunting Etudes. For those of you who don't know, the galloping-like figures of this piece aren't just for difficulties sake - this Etude was inspired by the story of the Ukrainian military commander Mazeppa, specifically Lord Byron's poem about his youth, in where Mazeppa was tied to a horse and dragged around Europe as punishment for having an affair with a Polish Countess. There is obviously a lot more to the story, the summary and poem is available online for you to read, though even with this small piece of information the piece begins to make a lot more sense. This galloping motion is captured by Liszt in the use of his consecutive 24 -> 24 fingerings for the thirds (often disregarded by pianists for easier playing), but the feeling of the motion and physical look created by this movement is very reminiscent of a wild horse, it's amazing how many layers there are to the inspiration. Étude Op. 10 No. 4 in C# minor, known as the Torrent Étude, is a study for solo piano composed by Frederic Chopin in 1830. It was first published in 1833 in France, Germany, and England as the fourth piece of his Études Op. 10. This study, a very fast Presto con fuoco, features continuous sixteenth notes (semiquavers), in perpetuum mobile fashion involving both hands.
