Championing a sound both highly energetic and firmly contemporary, the American DJ and producer has us working out with every bar. From strapping 4x4 charges to gut-churning brain intruders, onto experimental-leaning glides and further esoteric drifts, Juana’s dance floor hoodoo is as bewitching as it is deadly. Spanning harsh industrial, rough-hewn proto-techno and lo-slung machine funk, her RYC mix ticks all the boxes of a grade-A puzzler, eyes constantly set on that next killer loop that’ll get the crowd veering off into pure XTC.

Juana is a DJ and producer hailing from the city of Chicago and has been DJing house, techno, and disco parties since roughly 2001. Juana started obsessively collecting disco and early house records in the late 90s and eventually developed an undying penchant for proper techno and darker shades of Chicago underground acid and deep house of the 80s and 90s. Juana moved to DC in 2003 and began hosting weekly live internet radio shows and playing parties in the deep house scene. Over the past several years, Juana has made her mark as primarily a techno DJ, making regular appearances at BASEMENT in New York as well as Berghain. She is a founding member of the DC QT BIPOC collective NOXEEMA JACKSON. As a producer, she has released music independently, and on Ilegal Alien, No Mercy, World Building, and Perimeter Junk.

I made this for a show in Spring of 2020 that nobody listened to! Here are some self-indulgent thoughts about this mix that I would like to fart out now:

"I felt like recording a house music mix because (A) I haven't made one in years (it's been almost all techno-leaning stuff) and (B) I wanted to air out some of my favorite deep house vinyl purchased from 2000-2008 or so. My friend and bona fide DJ legend Sam 'The Man' Burns recently passed away, and he worked at a shop here in DC called DJ Hut. Many of these records I bought from him, and so they are associated with good memories of when I first started playing out, opening up for Sam quite a few times. We had very different styles but still somehow matched up musically really well, so that was always fun.

"I remember when I bought the Dan Electro record and Sam said 'When I saw the cover, I thought it would be some bullshit, but it's actually pretty good.' It's been a favorite ever since. 'Twilight' was also in my heavy rotation back then, and I thought it would go nicely with the '...Commercial Free' acapella. 'Do You Want My Love' by Caro has those haunting vocal samples that stick in your head. Also the House Marty (LA Williams) track 'Club Babalu' is so mesmerizingly weird and set the exact mood I wanted. Lastly 'Zunga Zawzi' is just gorgeous ... great stuff from Peven Everett."
