Carlo Gambino should need no introduction to this industry we all love, he has been DJ’ing since the 90’s and has played at many of worlds best loved club nights including ‘Back to Basics’ (Leeds), ‘Sankeys’ (Manchester), ‘Trafik’ (London), ‘Culture Box’ (Copenhagen), ‘Pix Club’ (Switzerland), ‘Decadence’ (Paris), ‘Verboten’ (NYC), ‘Sash’ (Sydney). Carlo has also held many significant residencies over the years both in his hometown of Leeds and also in Europe, including The Premier Etage Terrace for Carl Cox at Space in Ibiza plus the weekly Sunday Social parties for Audiojack at Veto, also in Ibiza.
Collecting Vinyl from the age of 11, Carlo was 16 when his love of all things ‘House’ began. It became very clear from an early age that music would play a major role in Carlo's life; for over 35 years his father has worked in the music industry, touring with artists such as Michael Jackson, Prince, Black Sabbath, Madonna and Rod Stewart, so it came as no surprise that he was destined to follow a similar path. 
Carlo's dj career spans well over 2 decades with his production career now well into double figures gaining countless support from all the A-listers including Jamie Jones, Moodymanc, Justin Harris, PBR Streetgang, Inland Knights, Adam Shelton to name but a few. Carlo’s first major signing was for Al Bradley’s 3am Recordings, since then Carlo has gone onto release several more tracks for 3am including the labels 50th anniversary release with 2 vinyl releases for 2019. 
Several strong releases have followed since the start of 2010, which have led to a rapid increase in demand for Carlo's original and remix work globally. With releases on heavyweights such as Made With Love, Whoyostro, Oh So Coy, Bullet:dodge, Click Therapy, Dilate, Something Else, Apollo Music, Proper Slap, Tokyo Red, Euphoria, Still Play Records and Jamie Jones’s ‘Hot Waves'.
In 2011 Carlo launched his very own label, 'Midnight Social Recordings'. The label has gone from strength to strength, gaining recognition in all the right places. The label is now pushing forward this year with another string of quality releases including some more vinyl releases, which will take the label way past the mammoth 50th mark. The label is now on its 62 release and has no plans of slowing down anytime soon. In 2018 Carlo also launched his second label, ‘Amongst Others’, taking on the more minimal tech side of house. Artists including Lee Guthrie, Lau Frank, Rob Pearson and MYR have already released on the label with plenty more to come this year and beyond.

DJ Joolz Collins Presents #2 DJ GRIPPER 
We asked for an insight into his life in music. 
Well, here goes.
With a love of both traditional and electronic music across an eclectic range of styles and tempos, from retro to contemporary, Gripper’s sets can be a melting pot of genres that work to bring together a fusion of musical flavours.
Wether it’s from Jazz to Deep House, from Funk to World Electronica or from Proto-Dicso to Dub, Gripper digs deep into his 40+ years of collecting to bring together the very best in new music, crossing musical boundaries and innovating to keep the dance floor, radio listener and lounge bar alike educated and entertained.
Graham Newby, AKA DJ Gripper began vinyl collecting during the punk and new wave boom of the mid-late 70’s, at a time when disco and funk played as much a part of his musical attention, leading to a wide ranging collection from the very start.
Influenced by the soul scene in his native north west of England, Gripper took onboard huge influences from his early forays into club culture and import record stores from 1982 onwards during extensive trips to London and Manchester where the dance music scene was fresh and pushing boundaries that were to lay the foundation for his first DJing exploits.
1985 saw the journey begin with Gripper picking up 2 old belt drive turntables and making mixtapes for friends before being invited to play records a couple of years later by local innovator Said-man Li at his Invasion Dance Department underground student club parties in his hometown of Barrow-in-Furness.
The pair created a burgeoning alternative music scene that led to gigs at many of the north’s infamous and iconic venues and events throughout the late 80s and early 90’s.
The following 5 years were to prove seminal with Gripper establishing his nights as legendary events regularly making top 10 listings in national magazines such as Mixmag, Black Echoes, DJ Mag.
Gripper guested at many groundbreaking clubs around the UK as a result, and began producing music in 1991 and has released music on labels such as Grand Central Records, Dancefloor, OffWorld Sounds, Om Records, Upskirt Records Ibiza, Fat City Recordings, Triple J, Lockdown and more. Recent remixes include projects for cult US label, Bottom Line and Afro House and Soulful House remixes for US singer Ania Garvey
Gripper’s remixes have included the likes of Usher, Mobb Deep, Little Egypt, Shaun Ryder, AIM, Gard Du Nord, Jon Kennedy, Victor Simonelli and Niko. A personal milestone was reached when he produced a track for the iconic KRS One on the 2017 released ‘King Of The Oldschool’ album. Other recent productions with Redvenom, Craig G and Donald D from Ice-T’s Rhyme Syndicate show Gripper’s long standing association with real hip hop and it’s culture
In 2011 Gripper and partner Rob Dunphy set up Sonic Zoo Radio, broadcasting a multitude of locally sourced shows over the internet. Gripper’s regular ZOO-OLOGY show has been an outlet for his love of eclectic new music ever since, and has built up a loyal following across the globe.
Since November 2015, Gripper has been playing monthly at Amsterdam’s Kashmir Lounge, indulging himself and audience in his favoured 6-7 hour sets. Recent trips have seen Gripper standing in for DJ Dribbler on his highly regarded Red Light Radio shows from the city.
Gripper currently runs Barrow Underground Music Society, a private members club which has been attracting a wide range of live music and alternative DJs to this unique venue. The club and its model has been recognised as a real alternative to the way venues have been operating, having been started the week of David Mancuso’s death and as a continuation of that Loft rent party legacy. Small, totally independent of funding, handbuilt from nothing and with a party-in-your-living room vibe, it acts as a kickback against the mainstream and associated pseudo-culture and as a return to Gripper’s first roots of anti establishment DIY punk ethos.

With nearly three decades of DJing behind him, James Patta is one of the most experienced DJs in the north of England.
 
A Leeds’ institution, he’s lived and breathed the dance music scene through the changing eras, as happy playing mod, indie and northern soul tunes as he is dropping old skool house, piano classics and 80s pop.
 
But it’s his winning blend of house, classics and disco and nu-disco edits – including his much-sought after bootleg of ‘My Old Piano’ that’s been dropped at Glitterbox gigs across the globe – that has seen him become a fixture on the club scene in the last decade. Recent residencies include Teatro @ Club Mission and his long-running 80s Love Affair and Glitterball gigs at much-loved bunker bar Distrikt, alongside regular slots for the fast-rising Moretti Club. Other big-profile guest slots include for legendary Leeds nights Back2Basics and Soak, an annual pilgrimage to Beatherder Festival and shows alongside Carl Cox, Faithless, Erick Morillo, Ralph Lawson and many more.

A real DJs DJ, able to pull out a lost classic in record time and mix it with current disco-infused house cuts, he’s grown to become a go-to DJ in the north of England, with gigs in York, Manchester, Halifax and of course his native Leeds. Which is where you’ll find him most weekends, either arms up and celebrating the good life at a gig or headphones on and ear-to-ear smile locked in behind the decks making his DJ magic happen.
