The 12 tracks from the first year of the Sub-Zero Series have been remixed by the first year of artists with some fantastic results. Showcasing talent across different genres of electronic music including house, techno, electronica, drum n bass and ambient styles, we have 12 artists, contributing a remix each to this years edition.

The Sub-Label Zero Series explores a new avenue for the record label to spotlight artists with a monthly single track release, no frills, just all focus on the music. 

Sub-Label Recordings have developed the Sub-Label Zero Series with the sole purpose of encouraging upcoming Producers and Artists to release their music.

We are proud to continually champion and collaborate with those who share our passion for electronic music.

We welcome back Broken Boy to the Yellow Label with the beautifully crafted Slowdown featuring Cora, and a remix of the track from aardonyx. 

Broken Boy and Cora wrote this song right in the thick of the pandemic and they say - Honestly, it's a reflection of everything we were feeling at the time. Working with Cora on this project was a chance to turn all that confusion and restlessness into something tangible.

The lyrics capture that sense of disconnection that so many of us felt. Lines like "Call my name, call my name, but I won't hear it" and "You're all the same, all the same" really hit on that emotional distance that felt so familiar back then. And of course, the repeated "Don't you bring me down" — that's us fighting back against it, refusing to let it get the better of us.

But it's not all heavy. There's this undercurrent of hope and persistence too. "Hold tight, stick with me, it'll be a wild ride" — that's the kind of energy we were channeling. Life's messy and unpredictable, but there's power in riding it out. The way the music shifts and builds reflects that back-and-forth of doubt and determination.

For us, this song is about those internal struggles that don't always have easy answers. It's a reminder that it's okay to feel stuck sometimes — the important part is finding the strength to keep going. We're really proud of how it all came together, and we hope it speaks to anyone out there feeling that same push and pull.

In November 2019 we were dBs Music in Plymouth for an Open event, where Ben put together this remix as an example to prospective students of what skills can be attained from learning and working within the music industry. 

Blu Mar Ten are an inspiration for the aardonyx project and it was a privilege and a great insight in to their production being able to listen to the individual sounds and further manipulate them.

aardonyx - The Octopus (Part 1)

The Octopus opens with the atmospheric ‘The Darkness Unfolds’ which bursts into life with analogue synths and syncopated breaks. Track 2, ‘Hole’ abruptly follows with sharp precise drums and sinister growls leaving space between phrases to create movement and keep the listener on edge. 

The EP continues in a similar vein with ‘Six Steps to Escape’ which maintains the energy with rolling breaks and heavy toms interjecting to attack the senses. Next the EP sees a turn in a different direction with the minimal half-time tune ‘Under’. 

Part 1 is finally concluded with another dark half-time tune ‘Down to Nothing’ which contains a similar sound pallet, bringing the ep to a close with a patient murky swagger.

aardonyx Mixtapes Volume 5 (SLR Mix and The Tech Collective Guest Mix by Undefined)

aardonyx are a Drum & Bass production duo from the North-West of England. Since they formed in 2015 they have released music on labels such as Atmomatix Records, The Tech Collective, Nu Venture Records and Detached Audio. They have also been included in releases alongside the likes of Nemy, HumaNature and Silence Groove.

The pair have been making music together for over 15 years ago, starting by performing in bands together at college. This is also when they were first introduced to music production and studio recording. Since completing his Ba in Multimedia and Sonic Arts, Ben has worked in commercial studios and teaches music production and recording. During this time Andy has been honing his skills as a Drum & Bass DJ and producer.

More recently they have concentrated on making bass music around 174 bpm. Their wide variety of influences have meant their sound can range from melodic minimal halftime tracks to frantic heavy bass driven stompers. Using vintage synths, analogue hardware and digital workstations, they craft rich sounds and rolling beats as well as exploring abstract sounds.

Having moved away from Manchester they now operate from Plymouth and Chester respectively collaborating remotely and coming together to write music together in Manchester studios as often as possible. The pair are most proud of their 10-track album with its accompanying remix album including the likes of Zed Bias, DJ Ransome (Sy:Ran), Bizzmo (The Inflamers) and Conrad Subs, through Sub-Label Recordings.

aardonyx boast an impressive live set-up with 3 deck mixing and accompanying visuals being triggered and manipulated in real time. Performances of note include warming up for the likes of Monrroe and Satl at Fluid Movement events in the UK.
