All Over Again

This song is about my home, Fayetteville, Arkansas. I can still remember the exact moment it popped into my head: It was during last year’s Block Street Block Party in-between the main beer garden’s stage area and Jr’s stage. I was walking to find this guy, Robby Huckabee, to ask him if he would play bass for us. School of Rock just ended their set, and Flight Machine was setting up to play. To me, Block Party is quintessential Fayetteville. It’s fun. It’s quirky. It’s eclectic. It signals the arrival of summer. I like its off-Dickson vibe. Anyway, on the way up Block St. to find Robby, I recorded the main riff and melody (via a tone-deaf hum) on my phone. Yep, I was that weirdo weaving in and out of the crowd humming into his phone like a madman. At that time, the song was just a little idea—one of many set to disappear in the expanding tone-deaf-sound-universe of Voice Memos.  Eventually, I found Robby, and he has been an awesome bass player ever since. On my way back down to the main stage, I typed some notes about that day and about Block St. I’m looking at those notes, a handful of broken fragments, right now on my phone and they are: “Slightly inverted parking spots,” “denizens dot the square line,” “Bacchic delight,” “decorated city side walls,” and “loud drums and hand claps.”  

Fast forward to June of last year: In the summer, I am off work, so I usually spend every morning recording. Often times, I go back through my phone’s voice memos to listen for forgotten ideas that might stick—that might still have some resonating quality. I was getting ready to mix-down a 30 second cut of “A Summer Daydream Part I” for City of Fayetteville’s next advertising campaign. So, Fayetteville was on my mind, and the Block St. Block Party riff was still sticking. I revisited the random, fragmented notes from that day, put a little song together, and recorded it that morning. This is that recording. Now, I’m sure there are better songs out there about Fayetteville and/or about Arkansas. I’m sure there is something more poetic, more melodious, more serious. But like Block Street Block Party and the weird street-side parking and the painted-wall-murals and the off-Dickson vibe, this song is about one thing: fun. Fayetteville is a fun place to live. It is fun because of all of these things, and it is fun because of its music. In Fayetteville, we do not take ourselves too seriously.  This is what separates us from others and binds us together. Here is “Block Street Bop.”
