Three years of perseverance has defined Steyoyoke Recordings as a successful upcoming label and with their 3rd Anniversary just around the corner, they have much to celebrate. The annual Steyoyoke Anniversary release sees them team up with some highly respected artists, bringing you a total of 4 remixes, all of which have been released on the label over the past year.

First up, is Einmusik’s remix of Soul Button & Talul’s ‘Chasing Thoughts’. Without losing any depth or warmth from the original, Einmusik chooses to imprint his version with a unique intensity that is evident right from the start. The intro instantly grabs you, followed by a stunning array of accomplished melodies and a meticulous breakdown to top it off.

Dahu’s ‘North’ is lavished by the skills of Krink and embedded with a profound new sound. Impacting it with steamy techno grooves and an unyielding energy, this remix escorts you deep into the underground. Expect eerie chord progressions, industrial sounding bass lines and a very subtle, yet ever present build of tension and ferocity.

The third remix is taken on by Solee, with his rendition of Soul Button’s ‘Swift Minds’. Solee opts to harness the uplifting vibe that strongly exists in the original and even goes so far as to incorporate a little extra bounce and zest to his remix. The vocals are also welcomely maintained right throughout the track, which strengthens the allure of this musical journey.

‘Take A Message’ originally produced by Sasch, is revisited by Boss Axis and it’s the last track to be remixed on this release. Possessing a significant upbeat infliction, Boss Axis has magnified this tracks light hearted nature and transferred it into a continuum of catchy melodies. It has a feel good quality and plenty of dance floor appeal.

This year’s version of Steyoyoke’s ‘Couple Affair’ features four tracks created by a combination of two of five label members: Soul Button, Nick Devon, Dahu, Animal Picnic, and Ran Salman. This memorable vinyl only EP brings the family together by showcasing the strength and harmony created by the pioneers of ethereal techno. 

Soul Button and Nick Devon join forces to create ‘Modus’, a heavenly techno imprint of a never-ending climax. Gentle yet hypnotic, the melodic nature of the synths carries a playful air, complimented by a powerful kick that embodies the mood of the entire release. Strong and dreamy, ‘Modus’ is the ideal way to begin this ‘Couple Affair’.

Nick Devon teams up with Dahu this time, giving birth to ‘Kaleidoscope’, a track with a wilder rugged feel. Truly a reflection of raw feelings, confident, unpredictable, and energetic, Nick Devon and Dahu have brought their most powerful elements to the table with this one, with shadowy basslines and heart-hitting percussions. 

Animal Picnic and Ran Salman take the twisted, dark path down to their ‘Mind Maze’ with a tragically beautiful melody that invites you into its mysterious basslines and addictive synths. ‘Mind Maze’ is an appropriate title for this masterpiece, and it is certain that you may find yourself lost in the sounds and on a true trip.

The final contribution made by Soul Button and Animal Picnic, ‘Icosian’, is filled with perks that pamper the ears. The last track on this vinyl-only release sets out to break the hearts of people around the globe as they experience the emotive nature of this timeless gem. The contrast of the lows and highs have become perfectly intertwined, manipulated in subtle ways that display the art of complexity and simplicity simultaneously.

Steyoyoke’s latest EP features smooth vocals by Canadian artist Terry Grant that compromises two originals by Soul Button, one piece by Soul Button and Aaryon, and a remix by Animal Picnic, coming together to make one tear-jerking EP. This ethereal techno tugs playfully at your heartstrings, with it’s moving melodies graciously complimented by beautifully contrasting dark lows and piercing highs. 

‘Wraith’, a melodic masterpiece composed by Soul Button, features an array of distorted synths which give the listener a warm feeling. Terry Grant’s reassuring vocals help guide you through this musical journey, adding an essential layer of identity to this track. A dreamy track featured on this EP, the combination of Soul Button’s impeccable technical skills coupled with Terry Grant’s homely voice make for a killer combo. 

Soul Button’s ‘Demise’, a suitable name for such a tragically sweet track, features dark lyrics by Terry Grant which contradict his calm voice. The sharp kick accompanied by the incredible chord progression featured in this beauty gives one the impression of haunting dream; like a lost love visiting you in your sleep. ‘Demise’ can give you chills in the centre of a sweaty dance floor.

Soul Button partners up with Aaryon and hits the nail on the head with another original titled 'Substratum'. The two composers have managed to craft a single piece that remains true to both styles. The chiming synths, mingled with the groove of the rides and shakers, emanates a dangerously delightful rhythm that could carry you into another universe!

Animal Picnic’s remix of Soul Button’s ‘Wraith’ is also featured on this EP, and the Steyoyoke regulars certainly know how to add their own spices to the dish. Accentuating their keenness for the more upbeat Steyoyoke sound, they manipulate Terry Grant’s vocals, stretching them out to create a nostalgic effect. Adding their own drums and synths that create an almost jungle-like vibe, Animal Picnic make their mark on this wild remix.

Soul Button, Terry Grant, Aaryon, and Animal Picnic have joined powers to bring you this psychologically spiritual EP packed with wistful drops and melodies. Another unforgettable treasure in the Steyoyoke archive, this EP is one for the books.

Oliver Schories faced Soul Button and BLANCAh's 'Rising Silence' turning this track into a twisted fantasy guaranteed to engulf you. MIDAS 104 approaches Animal Picnic's 'Gravity' with a bold confidence evident in the layout of this true anthem of ethereal techno, with a hint of funk! Lastly, but not leastly, Jonas Saalbach remixes Dahu and MPathy's 'Shattered' sticking to the darkness that is, while adding minimalistic elements to make this track simultaneously sink in and pop out in the most unpredictable and astounding ways.

“The first This Never Happened event in San Francisco this June was hands down my favorite show I've ever done. To see so many of you embrace the concept, put your phones away and get lost in the experience was something truly, truly special. Before that show, my team and I were super anxious about whether we could pull such an event off. Doing our first TNH show in San Francisco, possibly the most tech-hip and phone-happy city in the US, seemed pretty risky. But with the whole team pushing towards the same goal, it all worked perfectly - everything was even better than we had hoped. Not only did 99% of people keep their phones in their pockets the entire night (don't worry, we dealt with the other 1% ;)), everyone also had a noticeably better time at the show. I've never seen so many smiling faces, so many people meeting each other for the first time while dancing and bonding over a shared love and common taste in music - the actual beginning of a community was unfolding in front of our eyes. It was incredible. That show just reinforced even more what we believe in and the idea that what we're doing is something that the music community actually wants and needs.
For those reasons, we have decided to take This Never Happened on tour across North America. Each show will have an identical format. I’m playing extended sets only. Our core values remain the same. The dancefloor is a phone- and photo-free space. Leave the real world behind and come get lost in the music with us.
