Asymetrics Mixtape #25 : Maao - The Asymptomatics

This one has been in the works for a while but didn't actually make it out in 2021 but hey, what does the month or even the year matter anymore? This is a series for what was and well, 2021 -2022 has been pretty wild for the world (aren't they all lately?), oscillating between hope and heartbreak. This mix somehow tries to capture that. 

I would like to say a big thank you to all the people that shared music they found beautiful, quite a few tracks made it into this mix, as always in new contexts, different speeds, pitches and carefully folded with another track. Thank you for listening

In case you wondered, the art is a beautiful woodcut by Ukrainian-American artist Jacques Hnizdovsky (https://hnizdovsky.gallery). Hnizdovsky fled Ukraine in 1929 as a fourteen-year-old and spent most of his life in the US, becoming known for his woodcuts which often depicted flora and fauna, inspired by hours spent watching the animals at the Bronx zoo and Botanical Garden.

"If trees, plants and animals were originally only my second love, I found so much beauty in them, that they became my first.... I found complete harmony with them."

The Irish Times label him the '45 King' and Baz Hickey has earned the right to be described as such. Musically, he covers a lot of ground, always maintaining a hip hop sensibility when approaching the turntables. Having curated the "Funk 45s" night in Dublin's South William and later in the Sweeney Mongrel, his brand new all 45s night at The Bernard Shaw plays host to some of the scene's favorite spinners. On the broadcasting side, he has provided mixes for RTÉ (IRL), WFMU (USA) and 2SER (AUS)

El Búho is a UK producer now based Mexico City whose music draws the lines between electronic production, found sounds & organic samples and Latin American rhythms and folklore. He has released music on ZZK Records, Antartek Records and his latest EP Cenotes through Wonderwheel recordings and remixed for the likes of Chancha Via Circuito, Nicola Cruz, Tremor, Luzmila Carpio, Lucas Santana and Lulacruza amongst others

As well as curating the album A Guide to the Birdsong of South America he is also one of the co-founders of the Shika Shika with Argentine producer Barrio Lindo. He is currently working on his first LP.

This mix is 40 minutes of unreleased material, edits, remixes and music made specifically for Voodoohop!
