Jaguar
After the animalistic, migratory ventures of Le Règne Animal, the eponymous project of Montreal-based electronic music producer Gabriel Vigliensoni immerses us into the natural habitat of the mythical Panthera Onca.
The mini album presents itself as a concise mix of lush beat-driven tracks where strong swinging rhythmic dreamscapes are layered with shimmering synth sounds and Sprechgesang vocals. Influences from 70s German experimental artists are apparent throughout each track’s rolling soundscapes: circular melodic synth lines, rhythmically oriented vocal utterings, and echoes of lo-fi analog warmth envelop constantly evolving drumming sequences.
Vigliensoni’s exploratory approach to music production takes center stage in this release, giving it a life that transcends the meticulous polish typical of contemporary digital productions. More than the sum of influences or references to past traditions, Jaguar feels like a defiantly personal statement of what is important to Vigliensoni both as an artist and a producer: experimentation, intuition, and self-discovery.

Bio
Gabriel Vigliensoni is a Montreal-based musician and electronic music producer originally from Valparaiso, Chile. He has been involved in a variety of projects all through his lengthy musical career, with roles ranging from instrumentalist to producer and composer. His musical endeavours are informed by extensive studies in sound recording, new musical interfaces, and his current PhD research on musical recommendation algorithms.
Founding member and keyboard player of the notable Chilean rock band Lucybell for their three first albums, Vigliensoni then launched into an extensive portfolio of collaborations with a variety of artists and bands, constantly refining his distinct sound of edgy synth melodies, interlocked rhythms, and sonic experimentation.
Gabriel Vigliensoni’s solo career begins with the release Nata that experiments with techno and breakbeat and features rapper Kevin Sanders and Chilean pop diva Javiera Mena, while subsequent releases explore vocal-driven songs that eschew the standard pop format, relying instead on extended structures, slow beats, and live drum programming.
In his latest venture Jaguar, Vigliensoni intended to bring a feeling of liveness and immediacy to the digital production. His set of musical works escapes the perpetual cycle of correction and re-tooling that plagues the digital workflow and instead intuitively explores the many stages of current music production, hereby transforming the process of making a record into a playground for learning and experimentation.

as a central point of reference of grischa lichtenberger‘s »la demeure/il y a péril en la demeure« complex, raster-noton releases a limited edition of three 12“ vinyl EPs that are accompanied by a handmade, signed and individualized screen print.

the three EPs were set up as an experiment. each of the records is guided by a word that could be described as a phantasmagoria, a delusion of the 20th century – like a metaphor that is concerned not only with its immediate meaning, but with an implication more emotional, more irrational, telling something about the mindset of the not so distant past.

these keywords already existed before the production on the tracks began and thus played the role of an indirect orientation or playground for association. nevertheless, the EPs are not conceptualized, but rather a collection of habits and strategies in relation to the titles.

common to all EPs of the triptych is the question of a connection between intimacy and the public sphere. aesthetically, the music presented on the EPs ranges from distressing and unaligned dancefloor-oriented tracks to tribal and politically charged drones to unsettling noise ballads. on »spielraum«, for example, hypnotizing music box melodies are combined with claustrophobic breakbeats. »allgegenwart«, on the other hand, presents mechanical rhythms and sawing pads, topped with high-pitched warning sounds. last but not least, the final EP »strahlung« features self-forgetful, gloomy and melancholy tracks backed by melodies that remind of a barrel organ turned upside down.

The Queen of Rhythm & Blues… one of my favourites from her. This record goes for pence.
 
8. Marv Johnson - Baby Baby
Fantastic double sider 7" from Berry Gordy's first signing to Motown. When Gordy first started Motown he didn’t have the money to release records himself so struck a deal with United Artists where they would release and distribute Motown releases.
 
9. Soul Bros - Soho
Used to be a big Spider John spin back in the late 80s. This always takes me back to those brilliant days of my youth.
 
10. Jackie Opel - Turn to the Almighty 
The patron saint of Barbados and godfather of Spouge. Alternative take which came out on Top Deck a few years back
 
11. Marv Johnson - Don't Leave Me
Found this for 50p a few months back and have been playing it solidly since. Beautiful heart rendering tale of the insecure lover.
 
12. The Cleftones - Some Kinda Blue
Popcorn Soul Perfection! Managed to get a copy of this 1963 beauty recently and play it over and over
 
13. Nana Mouskouri – L’eau Qui Dort
Yes Nana! Stunning version of Still Waters Run Deep from one of a series of French Eps she did in 1963
 
14. Jimmy Breedlove – Guardian Angel
The original of this on Okeh always goes for too much money.. as much as I love it, more than happy to just have it on a Stardust bootleg. Jimmy used to be a backing singer for Atlantic records.
 
15. Lorne Greene – The Search
From his brilliant LP The Man.  Watching Battlestar Galactica and Bonanza growing up, we never knew he was massive on the Popcorn scene
