After the dynamo sophomore release that was 2013's "Curiosities", New Zealand's Lord Echo returns to Brooklyn's Bastard Jazz label, this time producing Kiwi trio The Elder Statesman comprised of twin brothers and Wellington fixtures Christopher (piano) and Daniel (double bass) Yeabsley with Lord Echo himself on percussion and drums. 

On the "A" side, Montreux Sunrise is mellow meander through a laidback early 70s souljazz vibes, while "Trans Alpine Express" picks things up on the B side with a deep, spiritual piano groove, upfront doublebass, and Echo's percussion perfectly in the pocket. 

A timeless gem of a 7" from Bastard Jazz, releasing their own namesake for once!

This is my small tribute to a mighty force in music who is sadly not with us any more.

I haven't done too much to this, just extended the intro from 4 to 16 bars and extended three sections later in the song from 2 to 4 bars. From those sections I've taken three different piano refrains and used them in the intro so that it isn't just a loop.

The rare 45 mix of Penny Goodwin's classic early 70s down-tempo rare groove. It excludes the LP versions double-time ending where Penny starts ranting about acid and track marks, but probably ends up being a generally more cohesive piece of music. Penny is from Milwaukee and still sings here occasionally to this day. The sessions that produced this record and the rest of her 'Portrait of a Gemini' LP were done in Chicago, however, with Richard Evans stepping in on arrangements. His string charts in particular really add a lot to this track. The title is taken from an old Jewish proverb, with lyrics cleverly adapting the sentiment for the switched-on kids of the late 60s/early 70s generation. Sy Lefco, the writer, penned many other tunes for black and white groups in Milwaukee at the time- effortlessly crisscrossing genre and racial boundaries.

Released via iTunes and also featured on Giles Peterson's Brownswood Bubblers Vol. 7 in October 2011, Make it Better is one of this artist's most seminal releases. 

This remix was not an officially commissioned project but more of a nod to the original acoustic masterpiece that is the original and readily available online today. 

It remained on my hard drive collecting dust so I came to the most logical conclusion of any right minded producer and that is to free it to the public to enjoy....it certainly was a joy to make.
