Frogs croaking in the cloud forest

August 14, 2022...    forest soundscape at ~ 5 am.   Quiet, still, calm, little wind, dominated by insect sounds typical of this time of year.  Recorder & mics located on the edge of a still pool in Brown Creek, not flowing this time of year due to lack of rain in late summer here.  There actually is a very slight flow of water, which can be heard thoughout the recording.   Photo shows site of recording.  Near the beginning of the recording there are calls of an eastern screech owl.  Later, a few frogs chime in.   This night was relatively cool for August (temps in the high 60°F range).  

In the forest here, this is the the quietest time of the night, 1-2 hours before dawn.  After dawn, the cicadas will start, the wind will pick up and it won't be quiet again until late afternoon.  As night falls, the evening summer soundscape here is dominated by (very loud) katydids, crickets, other insects and sometimes frogs/toads, for hours...   continuing through most of the night until early morning quiet time. 

Recorded with Earsight mics about 50-60 cm apart into a Zoom F3 recorder.  Low frequencies were attenuated and volume was adjusted.

Two years after Time to Die, French composer Christine Ott returns to Gizeh Records with her fifth album, Éclats (Piano Works), a collection of twelve pieces for solo piano, twelve impressionistic miniatures, instrumental and cinematic fractals celebrating the beauty of life.

Éclats (Piano Works) is a kind of mirror image to Chimères (for Ondes Martenot) (2020, Nahal Recordings), which showcased her other favourite instrument, and for which Christine Ott is particularly renowned - as she is through her past collaborations with Yann Tiersen, Tindersticks, and this year with Chilly Gonzales. But here, there's no vintage electronics: the musician unfurls acoustic landscapes in black and white, alone at the piano, behind a Steinway, a Fazioli or her father's old Prestel. The album opens with Pluie d'arbres, a powerful yet delicate allegory of deforestation. This duality runs through the album, whose energy is sometimes melancholy, sometimes hopeful, but always generous and full of empathy.

Sometimes nourished by revealing improvised gestures and crystallised during live performances, these new pieces by Christine Ott also make the link with various projects by the artist, both on stage and in film. Die Jagd nach dem Glück (The Pursuit of Happiness) is an extract from her original composition for Lotte, mon amour, a film-concert created in 2014 based on 4 short films by Lotte Reiniger, a German director from the first half of the 20th century. Lotte Reiniger was a true pioneer of animated film, and her films are still incredibly modern and human. Originally composed for piano, Martenot ondes and viola, this highly romantic piece is presented here in its simplest orchestration. Éruption Volcanique also foreshadows another film-concert work by Christine Ott, to come in 2024, for Robert Flaherty's Man of Aran. Set on a storm-swept island off the coast of Ireland, the film depicts the daily life of a fishing family in the 1930s. In a film-concert with an ambitious, physical and immersive score, the musician pays tribute to the courage of these inhabitants, united by a strong sense of solidarity, in constant battle with the elements.

Éclats (Piano Works) presents works recorded over a long period of time; a clear homage to Hitchcock, the writing of Vertigo undoubtedly has its origins in the composer's youth. Some pieces, such as Étreintes and Amours étoilés, were recorded during the sessions for Only Silence Remains (2016), and Christine Ott has regularly performed Golden Valley on stage since its creation in 2018 - whether as solo piano or rearranged in groups as part of her parallel projects (Snowdrops, Theodore Wild Ride...). Other compositions, such as Clouds of Dreams, are much more recent. So it's a real gift to finally discover on record the variety and richness of these twelve original compositions, which have long remained in the shadows.

And to bring these melodic bursts to life, Christine Ott called on the services of visual artist Léa Barbazanges, who creates sculptures and installations using assemblages of plant, mineral and animal materials. The works that adorn the album cover come from her Optiques series; 12 photographs of crystals seen through a lens, like a poetic prism that brings us closer to living things, their textures and ramifications, as obvious as they are complex, and that give a formidable visual echo to the 12 compositions on the album.

Ten years after his debut-album “Herbstlaub“ on CCO, german ambient composer Marsen Jules takes us to his “Empire of Silence“. An impressing soundtrack to the epic power and  beauty of nordic snow and ice-landscapes. Thereby he sounds even more elegiac, warm and romantic as ever before. This might be a result of a strict reduction to bittersweet symphonic string-sounds. Sounds which Jules elapses like a prism on the timeline and lets them meander on the slightly on the listeners eardrum. While others are still talking about “modern classic“, Jules is already moving on the particle-layer through the sound-continuum. Diving deeper into the sounds then ever before, he lets the frequencies mirror on the sound spectrum with an impressing precision. Actually there is not much space for “real“ silence on the album. Instead the epic sounds of “The Empire of Silence“ seem to unfold their archaic euphoria best at high volumes. An euphoria that carries everything away and occupies the whole space. For the track titles of the eight gems on this album Jules refers to different Words for snow in Inuit language, of which the legend says there are dozens. While the melancholic openers “penstla“ (the idea of snow) and “tlaslo“ (snow that falls slowly) still travel on soft ways, the album raises to its full euphoria with “kayi“ (drifting snow) and “skriniya“ (snow that never reaches the ground). With its epic magic the nine minute long “katiyana“ (night snow) thrills the listeners attention while “naklin“ (forgotten snow) brings a short inhale. The album finds its peak with the ecstatic glisandi of „chathalin“ (snow that makes a sizzling sound as it falls on water) and finds its finish in the beautiful and lofty “ylaipi“ (tomorrow´s snow). For everyone who is still not satisfied fully after this 55 minute journey through nearly endless stringlisandi, we recommend the 45-minute bonus track which comes as digital download with the cd version on bandcamp.

Place Language is an international non-profit compilation album project inspired by the themes found in Robert Macfarlane’s widely-acclaimed book ‘Landmarks’. In particular it focuses on the book’s extensive topographic glossaries, the “word-hoard” of depictive landscape terms gathered from 30 different languages, dialects and sub-dialects around Britain & Ireland and divided into sections by type of terrain (Flatlands, Uplands, Waterlands, Coastlands, Underlands, Northlands, Edgelands, Earthlands and Woodlands). Relying on these topograms, or “tiny place poems”, as creative prompts, Place Language seeks to both inspire a renewed interest in our surroundings and reinvigorate our appreciation for the audible textures & patterns that characterize a place in keeping with the book’s stated desire to “re-wild” our vocabulary.

The collection features the work of 28 different sound-artists, field recordists, and musicians from around the globe each of whom selected a Landmarks topogram and recorded an impression of it thus adding rich new aspects of dimensionality through the act of sonification. These selections cover all nine of the book’s glossaries along with place-words of new coinage as prompted by the blank one which Macfarlane leaves at the end of the book for readers to fill in from their own experience. The end result is a truly global and collaborative survey of place, language, and sound.
