The Burroughs capture the sonic spirit of the opulence of summer with their new single “Baby Get Down”: a song designed to unite people under the holy banner of the get down. Laid back beats, sexy lyrics, and fiery horns join forces for a tune that hits hard on the dance floor, but never takes itself too seriously.  

Lead singer Johnny Burroughs says, “I wrote this song after a unforgettable night of dancing to the classic funk band ‘ZAPP’ at the Moxi theater in Greeley. The groove was heavy, people were sweating, my girl was beside me and we spent the night getting lost in the music together.”

The song starts with a chorus of soaring vocals (provided by keys player Kelsey Shiba) before falling into a laid back funky beat (provided by dynamic married rhythm section members Mary and Brian Claxton). Once the chorus drops and the horns hit, listeners can’t help but get up, get down and “shake their rumps” as the song instructs. The verses are peppered with tongue-in-cheek spoken responses to Burroughs’ lead vocal, a la Bootsy Collins.

“Love and Unity” is an audacious, over-the-top bop that feels like a party being thrown from start to finish. The group vocals and layered synthesizers are a nod to the influence of bands like Parliament-Funkadelic and the Ohio Players, while the driving beat and mix of sampled sounds alongside acoustic instruments gives the track enough heft to feel at home on a dance floor in 2020 next to acts like Anderson Paak and Childish Gambino. Burroughs’ lyrics cleverly call his audience in, rather than calling them out. He suggests that arguments and differences dissipate under the positive influence of a shared musical experience.

Love And Unity

The B-side track “We Got To Stand” is the heavier, harder-rocking reflection to the lead single. The tune’s main riff is an earworm grounded by spacey vocal stacks and a classic overdriven lead guitar, reminiscent of Funkadelic. Waves of organ, Wurlitzer, and Moog give the track a psychedelic depth with a nod to artists like The Alabama Shakes and Hendrix. Burroughs’ vocals are delivered with raw energy, on the verge of breaking into chaos as he directs his listeners to take action and stand up for each other.
