The members of The Confessors have been making music from an early age. Rachael and Meredith first met in high school, and in 2010 they reconnected after attending the same college. Rachael had been composing and recording music on her own since 2006, but after a jam session with Meredith and a pitcher of Arrogant Bastard ale, a musical partnership was born. This led to the formation of The Confessors in May 2011.

The original lineup featured Rachael as the singer/songwriter and guitarist and Meredith as the bassist; however, after several personnel changes, they share all the musical roles, switching as the need arises from one instrument to another.

They draw inspiration from the music of Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, Bon Iver, The Band, Southern rock and outlaw country, My Morning Jacket, and Joni Mitchell, among others.
