Irish artist The Cyclist (Andrew Morrison) delivers a four-cut dispatch of throbbing house rhythmics and afterhours glow inspired by a trip to Chicago in the summer of 2023. “Mescalate” slides through the door with an uptempo house roller, piston hats and soft-clipped stabs. Title track “Sublimity” slides into a hard-edged garage-house sway with mantra-esque vocals whirling over rolling bass. “Beamin” turns the lights up bright, synthy chords arcing like sun through the fog. Closer “Black Velvet” dials it down into a dubby, deep, bass-heavy stout drift that lingers in the chest long after the needle lifts.

To kick start his new label Overload Liverpool, Irish Liverpool-based artist best known as The Cyclist drifts into the shop at 90mph under his second new alias of the year, The Motorist. A distinct homage to UK Garage, 2-step and breakbeat, his unique take on the genre shimmers through a haze of psychedelia and is accompanied by Liverpool local and girl-next-door vocal talent Flower Bed who floats above an undercurrent of bombastic bunker busting bass that’s sure blow a few funktion ones and heads.

Kollaps (The Cyclist Remix)

Following up on a cracker split single last year, Overload Liverpool jumps into 2024 firing on all cylinders with a 5 shooter of freaked-out electro, warm house, deep dub cuts, and gorgeous ambient.

Firstly, Liverpool-based label boss Morrison highlights two of his distinct and dissociative styles. On the front end of the A-side, his The Motorist alias provides us with a freaked-out formant-filtered electro that’s bursting at the lips. On the back end, a deep yet bright house cut from his The Cyclist alias, with warm warbling synths layered over his Wurlitzer electric piano and suitably grooved and jaunty beats.

To kick off the deeper B-side of the 12”, Wax Tek, a founder of the Liverpool Soundsystem crew Polyone Audio, hits us right in the chest with his dubbed-out breakbeat wonder, Get Set, which diverges through Balearic, bass music, a delirious breakdown, and hard-hitting breakbeats.

Deeper still, the second B-side from Puncta, another Liverpool-based artist, who last year came to light with their release on Sputnik One’s N-Face, dives into the deep Arctic seas with Snow Crab, an exercise in dubbed-out electro-style bass music.

Finally, Belfast-based Aaron Thomas brings the 12” EP to a fitting closure with Concert², which, washing over the listener, dances like opulent drapes with its ethereal synths that crash to and fro.

Irish independent Andrew Morrison (The Cyclist, Buz Ludzha, etc.) returns as Indopan with a 70-minute suite of jazzy kinetics, lysergic breaks, and dusted swing: In Opulence.

Inspired by a recent haul of modified rig acquisitions, including a Wurlitzer 206A, Korg Polysix, and analog Soviet drum brain called the Marsh UDS, the album skews his signature “tape throb” sound through a warmer, warbly lens, streaked with grit and sepia haze.

Morrison mentions themes of unattainable desire and hidden fracture as touchstones (“the breaking at the seams of a smile”), which are especially apparent in his two collaborations with vocalist Elaine Howley (“Shore Ellipsis” and “Antigreed”).

But, throughout, the songs churn, burn, and billow with elusive movement, sweeping through rolling hills and misty city streets, in the shadow of uneasy futures.

The collaboration has continued on from the island with Elaine featuring on the new The Cyclist album  "In Opulence" - under the alias Indopan - that has just been released on the lauded 100% Silk imprint.

Kicking off our Assembly Mix Series ahead of our inaugural event on 28th November at Meraki, Liverpool we’re excited to introduce the first of our four residents: Andy Morrison, aka The Cyclist, with a genre-blending journey through house, garage, breaks, bass and techno.

An Irish, UK-based producer and DJ known for his analogue, psychedelic club sound, @thecyclistbuzludzha draws from a huge range of influences; Krautrock, 60s psychedelia, early Chicago house, techno, jungle and dub. With his signature use of extreme tape distortion, he’s carved out some of the most visceral yet cerebral dancefloor music of the past decade, releasing on iconic labels including Stones Throw, Leaving Records, 100% Silk, Hypercolour, and All City Records.

Fresh off the release of his vinyl-only 12" Sublimity (already selling out in shops worldwide) and just back from his first Paris gig, he brings us an eclectic and immersive start to the series.

Filled with unique nuances and creative vocal sampling, knee rattling bass and a sprinkle of synthesisers which hum and snap, enter Requite the latest offering from Tape Throb puppeteer and master of distortion The Cyclist. Progress through tracks which dip their rhythmic toes into techno, no wave and psychedelia, bridged across the divide by the artistic tropes of a musician who knows both his stamp and his reach. Dissimilar and yet united, material and yet transient, Requite is a favour returned from an adherence to the Andrew Morrison project, a response for the love which bent brass and set bones in motion. A flourish; now for the attentive Requite.

This project of mine, is an attempt to get to a time in electronic music, where everything sounds warmer, like with the more techno-ey tunes by throbbing gristle maybe abit like what geogaddi by boards of canada got across,but with a whole other meaning with a more dancable edge of new order.
