Faithless and Faceless

Winter 2012 and The Daturas are in an Abbey Road mastering suite, putting the finishing touches to their debut EP ‘Overlooked by the End’. Sean Magee is at the controls, who won himself a Grammy for the Beatles remasters among many other worthy projects. The Daturas EP was produced and mixed by Ian Grimble (Mumford & Sons, Daughter) at the Church studio in Crouch End. Considering the lively pedal steel and dynamic rhythm section, Ian was the perfect choice to recreate their live sound in the studio. The Daturas began as a slightly psychedelic folk band in Wiltshire and have been developing a live set ever since, merging their love of’s 60s/70s music with some of their contemporary influences...grizzly bear, fleet foxes, half moon run, and mumford & sons. But Joe attributes a lot of the Daturas’ sound and lyrics to his time as a ‘water gypsy’, living on a refurbished 1950's lifeboat where they would play music late into the night. At the same time, Will was busy filling his house with vintage instruments, recording equipment, and anything that would help them develop and be self-sufficient. But despite their love of all things vintage, they’re still barely out of the school where they met. Supporters include BBC Bristol and BBC Wiltshire, who have been playing a lot of Daturas music and featured/interviewed the band several times, Adam Newton (Blackbud, Zun Zun Egui, Alessi’s Ark) who depped on bass for a while. And musician friend Randall Phillips (Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Elviin, The Leisure Society). The Wiltshire Times also ran a full page feature in December. The Daturas played a number of London shows in 2012, played sold out shows around Bristol and Bath including the Chapel Arts Centre, and played at Glastonbury, Sunrise and Fieldview Festivals.
