MIMS is very excited to have the first drop on Orestes Gomez' remix for fellow Venezuelan Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos' "Bocón". A lush neo-soul & jazz heavy bed for Luzmira Zerpa's poignant verbal attack on lying politicians. Taken from a forthcoming remixes 45 on London-based Olindo Records.

Orestes' remix made a BIG impression on Raúl Monsalve: "I was so impressed by what Orestes did, taking the original track to another realm... and groovy as a motherfucker". Orestes is joined on the track by some impressive sidemen, including bassist Daniel Briceño (La Vida Boheme) and flautist Eric Chacón (Tony Succar / Miguel Siso).

Orestes Gomez is one of the most recognized drummers in Latin America. His work fusing musical genres including: Afro, Latin, Hip Hop, and Jazz has earned him international recognition. He has travelled the world playing and collaborating with some of the most respected bands of Latin America including; Los Amigos Invisibles, Gustavo Dudamel, Caloncho, Mcklopedia, Apache, and Akapellah. On the remix he is joined by some exciting musicians, including bassist Daniel Briceño (La Vida Boheme) and flautist Eric Chacón (Tony Succar / Miguel Siso).

Last year Orestes produced the entirety of 'Dealers in Caracas', a hip hop album in partnership with Venezuelan MC Mcklopedia, and earlier this year he released a series of contemporary jazz pieces in a trio with Latin Grammy nominated pianist Gabriel Chakarji and bassist Freddy Adrian.

Raúl Monsalve and his all-star family of musicians received praise and support for their exciting fusion of Afro Venezuelan rhythms with Latin jazz, psych, funk and Afrobeat, from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Gideon Coe, Huey Morgan, Stuart Maconie (BBC Radio 6 Music), Jazz FM, NTS, Songlines, Bandcamp, Radio Nova, Le Grigri, FIP, and of course, Music Is My Sanctuary.

Raúl Monsalve y los Forajidos are currently on a European tour with dates across France, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and the Supersonic Jazz Festival in Amsterdam.

The Orestes Gomez remix of "Bocón" is streaming from this week across all the usual platforms and is available to pre-order on vinyl and download from the Olindo Records Bandcamp. The full 45 with a remix of another 'Bichos' cut, by fellow Venezuelan Venezonix, is due for release on September 4, 2021.

Taken from the duo's 2021 album 'Break The Wall' MF Robots' Dawn Joseph and Jan Kincaid have released another slab of dance floor soul in 'Make The Call'. A sure-fire groove that underpins a sublime vocal, 'Make The Call' is sure to be one of the festival, event and club hits of the Summer.

Now available as a digital download, 'Make The Call' also comes with an extended version and remixes from the legendary Two Soul Fusion duo of Louie Vega and Josh Milan. These remixes bring something new and special to the track with each creating a subtly different mood for the dance floor, for the radio and for the house party.

MF Robots is a songwriting, production and performing duo created by former Brand New Heavies founder Jan Kincaid and BNH vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Dawn Joseph. The pair left the Heavies in 2014 to record their own compositions and have been wowing audiences and record buyers with their effortless blending of Soul, RnB, Funk, Disco and Jazz ever since.

Louie Vega is one half of the House music dons Masters at Work and Josh Milan is a Grammy nominated vocalist, musician and composer who also collaborate in Vega's collective 'Elements of Life'. With both at the forefront of production, composition and remixing for more than three decades, the House, Boogie and Instrumental versions they have produced for 'Make The Call' are off the scale here.

Atjazz AKA Martin Iveson is a prolific remixer who has reworked tracks for Nitin Sawhney, Bob Sinclair, Jazzanova and even Henry Mancini (the Pink Panther theme) as well as working with vocalists of the stature of Robert Owens and Clara Hill. As Martin states, 'Remixing helps hone your sound and allows the producer to print their trademark into another space.' Well he certainly has done this here with his distinctive remix of 'The Love It Takes.'.

With the release of “Oba”, BBE has uncovered a rare gem. Production duo Dan Stillit and Oli Savill (collectively, Deep Tenor City) bringing together a wide group of the most accomplished (some Grammy- nominated) artists from the worlds of Jazz, Latin. Fusion, Funk and Afro-beat. “Oba”, recorded in the winter months of 2003, is a complex and percussion-rich slice of glorious afro-cuban jazz fusion, is only now seeing the light of day, having this year been given serious underground airtime and club play.

The EP also features an infectious and distinctive and remix from the mighty Opolopo and a vocal-rich deep house remix from AriesAudio (Josh Emman). Again, both tracks have been had strong early reception in the underground scene.

About “The Egyptian Second Line” 

In the spirit of reclaiming that which colonization sought to destroy, I'm releasing the first single from my upcoming album Afro-Caribbean Mixtape at the top of Columbus Day weekend. Like a piece of African patchwork, this track is comprised of a lot of different elements — some old, some new. The main body of this record was constructed from the end vamp of a tune I wrote for Dr. Greg Carr (chair of African-American studies at Howard University) called, “Kimathi.” In fact, throughout the piece, you can hear my turntablist, DJ Lady Fingaz, scratching a sample I chopped from one of his interviews. I constructed a new work by cutting and pasting the best moments of Kevin Hays and I playing keyboards on top of the extended jam, and superimposed that over the groove laid down by bassist Vicente Archer, drummer Joe Dyson, and percussionist Daniel Sadownick. I did this with the help of my mix engineer, Blake Leyh (The Wire, Treme). 

Towards the beginning of the piece, you'll hear a chant from vocalists Yolanda Robinson, Jolynda Phillips, and Christina Machado. It's from a thing my father made up while walking through his childhood neighborhood of 13th Ward New Orleans back in the 1940s, “Na-na ni-ta ho-ho. Left, right. Left, right.” Thirty years later, as an elementary school band teacher at McDonogh #15, he had us chant this whenever we marched in second line parades. It recalls the syllabic prayers of ancient languages used in modern dance songs like Mani Dibango's “Soul Makossa,” of which Michael Jackson borrowed for “Wanna Be Startin' Something.”  


The centerpiece of the single is my recitation of a poem I wrote back in 2006 in the aftermath of the flood commonly referred to as “Katrina.” It's called “The Egyptian Second Line.” The gist of the poem toys with the theory that somehow Africans submitted to slavery in an attempt to become better versions of themselves. After the ladies chirp the hook, I step away from the keyboards and embrace the instrument I'm most known for — the trumpet — and blow a few before we take it out. With this song, I am channeling the energy of the ancestors to help give Africa back to herself in the best way I know how, through the power of music. 


In New Orleans, a “second line” is the procession where we dance in the streets to music played by a brass band to celebrate either life or death. When I think about what an Egyptian second line looks like, I think of the imagery of that photo of Louis Armstrong serenading his wife, Lucille in front of the Sphinx — again Africans giving Africa back to herself.

We are excited to premiere Go See by Joe Armon-Jones. Joe delivers a playful, improvisatory approach, showcasing everything he has learned on his musical journey so far. Full of ad-libs and stunning solos, the piece is almost hypnotic in its musicality. 

As well as being a founding member of the Ezra Collective he has performed with a wide range of artists from Pharoahe Monch, to ATA KAK, and is a regular fixture in the bands of Nubya Garcia, Idiom, China Moses and Binker Golding Quartet.

Melbourne’s jazz and soul scene has drawn some well-deserved international attention recently, so we’re happy to fan this worthy musical flame by premiering an upcoming digital single and the fourth release of Melburnian label, La Sape. Brisbane’s James Wright Trio has prepared a 12” EP for the label, so, as a warm-up of sorts for that release, La Sape headhunted rising Melbourne musician Horatio Luna to remix some 2017 demos of James Wright Trio’s track, Pieces.

And those with a special affinity with jazz-house blends could do themselves a big favor by sifting through Horatio Luna’s nascent but promising discography. He’s the bassist of jazz-heavyweights, 30/70 (whose music we’ve premiered before), and has, apparently, been honing his production skills.

So it’s no surprise this seven-minute remix exudes musical dynamism. It morphs from an archetypal jazz loop of splashy cymbals and a stuttered chord progression of moody keys to frantic drums and flurried keys of a much lighter, dreamier kind. Yet it all sounds like one, cohesive piece of music. The continual threads throughout the track are the live-recorded drum samples (courtesy of drummer and bandleader, James Wright) and Danika Smith’s captivating, echoed vocals that loop over and over again to blanket the song with an alluring and almost psychedelic veneer.

This song is like a makeshift raft: it’s a little bit rough, made of parts that fit surprisingly well together, and will probably make you float for a few minutes.
