The terrific flop single that started/finished/still continues it all. Written in the 1980s, badly recorded in 1991, and now finally salvaged from a worn out cassette tape. Personnel: Ben Oates (vocals, guitar), Jon Cockerell (guitar), Vic Pratt (bass), Jan Manthey (mighty organ).

Uri Geller (He Bends The Spoons) - 20 Golden Greats (1991)

A vaguely distasteful title I know. Every time I hear this I think of some video we shot of us playing this and the beastly pointy-collared neo-hippy shirt I was wearing in it.

Vic's Licks - 20 Golden Greats (1991)

You'll note we were mentioning our fave film 'Psychomania' in this song some time before it became 'hep'. Of course, smurfs were never 'hep', though I always had a sneaking regard for Father Abraham.

Godzilla Versus The Zombie Smurfs - 20 Golden Greats (1991)

One of the earliest Pratt / Manthey songwriting collaborations, so perhaps less metallic than some of the other numbers. Jan loved to insert brackets in song titles wherever possible.

Beep Beep (I'm Yours) To Keep - 20 Golden Greats (1991)

Do you enjoy hissy audio recorded straight from the TV? No? But at least it's louder than the bit at the start.

Can You Prove It Didn't Happen? (Outro) - 20 Golden Greats (1991)

I think we handed people plastic flowers whilst performing this song. Well, it was the 1980s.

I'm Happy - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

Yum (Yum) Bubble Gum - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

I remember Jan yelping the words 'knobheads' and 'space' down an 'echo tube' as backing to Ben's vocal. For some reason, some of those backing vocals got wiped, or something, so we had to re-record them. But no matter what we did, the sound was nothing like it was previously. Listen and you'll know what I mean. It's all analogue, folks!

Planet Of The Knobheads - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

For reasons unknown, this song - which is entirely all our own work, I might add - was removed from YouTube owing to 'copyright infringement'.

Christopher Lee (Would You Like A Cup Of Tea?) - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

Ben was churning out song ideas like nobody's business in 1991...

Hoorah! (It's Grim In Space) - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

Ho ho, this one always makes me smile...I love Jan's 'crybaby' vocal.

Bert And Ernie (Bedtime Chums) - The Salmon of Knowledge (1991)

The online sound archive of Hounslow's legendary Anarcho-Funsters of Pop.

Approximately 25 years and at least as many line-up changes later, the group is almost still going, and is just as popular as it always was. Fans include: Uri Geller.
