Previously a teacher, secondary headteacher, Executive Director of the London Centre for Leadership in Learning, Director for School Partnerships at University College London, a Chair of Governors, and a Founding Fellow and Vice President of The Chartered College of Teaching, Vivienne is currently a leadership consultant supporting school and academy leaders with professional learning and development, impact evaluation, vision, strategy and women's leadership. She is one of the Co-Founders and Global Strategic Leaders of WomenEd.

Vivienne Porritt on gender equity, impact and courage in education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Amanda Heffernan about principals’ identities, work, wellbeing, and wardrobes. Amanda, a former public school principal, is a Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership at Monash University whose work focuses on principals’ work and lives, and on how we can better attract, support, and keep school leaders within the profession. She has a particular interest in leadership in complex school settings, including those in rural and remote areas, and the skills and knowledge that are needed to successfully lead those schools. She is author of numerous publications, including the award-winning book 'The Principal and School Improvement', and co-Editor of the 'Journal of Educational Administration and History'.

Deborah Netolicky talks with Adam Voigt about restorative practices, principalship, and trusting the teaching profession. Adam was a teacher and primary principal before founding the company Real Schools, a business that partners with schools to develop tools, skills, and attitudes to build meaningful relationships and positive school cultures. He an author, speaker, and prominent commentator on education in the Australian media, including news and current affairs show ‘The Project’, work through which he advocates for students and those working in schools.

Adam Voigt on restorative practices and restoring teaching

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Santiago Rincón-Gallardo about what it means to liberate learning from schooling, including global examples of learning communities embracing learning as a practice of freedom and humanity. Santiago is an education consultant, founder and director of Liberating Learning, and Chief Research Officer at Michael Fullan’s consulting team. He conducts research and advises leaders and educators to liberate learning in school networks and across educational systems in the United States, Canada, Latin America, and Australia.  As an educator and organiser, Santiago worked for over a decade to promote grassroots pedagogical change initiatives in Mexican public schools serving historically marginalized communities.  He was the director of a small NGO that catalysed a movement to turn conventional classrooms into tutorial networks, a movement that later on spread to over nine thousand schools across the country. Santiago's academic work explores how effective pedagogies for deep learning can spread at scale.  His most recent book is 'Liberating Learning: Educational Change as Social Movement'. Santiago holds a doctorate on Education Policy, Leadership and Instructional Practice from Harvard. He completed postdoctoral studies and has been a visiting scholar at the University of Toronto.

Santiago Rincón-Gallardo on living, liberating and leading learning

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Dylan Wiliam about his important work in formative assessment, as well as how classrooms and schools can create cultures of continuous improvement for all. Dylan is Emeritus Professor of Educational Assessment at University College London. In a varied career, he has taught in inner-city schools, directed a large-scale testing program, served a number of roles in university administration, including Dean of a School of Education, and pursued a research program focused on supporting teachers to develop their use of assessment in support of learning. His books include 'Embedded Formative Assessment', 'Leading Teacher Learning', and 'Creating the Schools our Children Need'.

Dylan Wiliam on learning, teaching, and cultures of continuous improvement

Deborah Netolicky talks to Dr Paul Campbell about teaching, leading, pracademia, and collaboration. Paul is Vice Principal of ESF Sha Tin Junior School in Hong Kong, with responsibility for learning, teaching, and assessment, professional learning, quality assurance, and child protection and safeguarding. Paul is also on a partial secondment to the ESF Centre for Research where he leads the 'Seeds of Leadership' programme. He is also a Partner Tutor at the University of Dundee working on MEd programmes in Educational Studies, and External Reviewer for MEd programmes at the University of Hong Kong. Paul is Chair of the International Professional Development Association (IPDA), and is co-coordinator of the educational leadership network for the International Congress for School Effectiveness and Improvement (ICSEI). Paul is also on the editorial board of the journal, Management in Education (MiE), and sits on the advisory board for the Leadership for Professional Learning (LfPL) symposium. Paul recently completed his doctorate at the University of Glasgow where he researched the context, governance, and leadership of collaboration for school and system-wide improvement.

Paul Campbell on leadership, pracademia, and collaboration

Deborah Netolicky talks to Dr Trista Hollweck about mentoring, coaching, teacher agency, wellbeing, play, and community. Trista is a pracademic who integrates the worlds of research, policy, and practice. She is a former teacher, vice-principal, and school district consultant. She is Director of the ARC Education Program that brings together Ministers and professional leaders from seven countries to advance equitable, inclusive and humanitarian goals in education, and co-Principal Investigator of the Canadian Playful Schools Network funded by the LEGO Foundation in the University of Ottawa. Her research has examined teacher induction, mentoring and coaching programs and their systemic change implications at the school board level. She has also researched, published and consulted about restorative justice, professional learning and development, teacher evaluation, and educational change. Trista received her doctorate from the University of Ottawa. She is committed to supporting schools and systems to improve education for all students within and across educational systems globally.

Trista Hollweck on professional learning, wellbeing and community

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Ellie Drago-Severson about adult learning and leading adult learners, through the lens of developmental psychology. Ellie is Professor of Education Leadership, and Adult Learning and Leadership, at Teachers College, Columbia University. A developmental psychologist, Ellie teaches, conducts research, and consults to schools and districts, school and district leaders, teacher leaders, coaches. and organizations on: professional and personal growth and learning; leadership that supports principal, teacher, school, and leadership development; and coaching and mentoring in K–12 schools, university settings, and other educational contexts domestically and internationally. Ellie Drago-Severson on adult learning and leading adult learners

Deborah Netolicky talks with Associate Professor Kevin Lowe about Aboriginal education research and practice in Australia, including the role and power of curriculum, the ‘making of teachers’, the importance of listening to the voices of Indigenous people and engaging community. Kevin is a Gubbi Gubbi man from southeast Queensland. He is a Scientia Associate Professor and Indigenous Fellow at the University of New South Wales, with experience in education as a teacher, administrator and lecturer. He has expertise in working with Aboriginal community organisations on establishing Aboriginal language policy and school curriculum implementation. Recently Kevin has worked with colleagues to review research across key areas of schooling and established the Aboriginal Voices project and is Lead Chief Researcher in the Culturally Nourishing Schooling project.

Kevin Lowe on sustainable improvement in Aboriginal education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Jen Buchanan about education that is global, future-focused and human-centred. Jen Buchanan on global, human-centred, future-focused education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Beth Blackwood AM about leading schools, principalship, and the complexity of education. Beth is the CEO of AHISA (the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia) and serves on the Boards of AITSL (the Australian Institute for Teaching, Learning and School Leadership) and the Australian Council on Children and the Media. She has been a teacher, deputy principal, and principal of various schools throughout Australia, as well  as President and Executive Board member of the Alliance of All Girls’ Schools Australasia. In 2022 Beth was recognised in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list “for significant service to secondary education, and to youth.”

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Andy Hargreaves about identity, wellbeing, student engagement, education research, and influence in education. Andy is Director of Chenine (Change, Engagement and Innovation in Education) at the University of Ottawa, Emeritus Professor at Boston College, and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the National Academy of Education, former President of the International Congress of School Effectiveness and Improvement, former Adviser in Education to the Premier of Ontario, and current adviser to the First Minister of Scotland. He has published more than 30 books and has 8 Outstanding Writing Awards. He has been honoured in Canada, the US, and UK for services to public education and educational research and is ranked by US Education Week as the #15 scholar with most influence on US education policy debate. Andy holds Honorary Doctorates from the Education University of Hong Kong and the University of Uppsala in Sweden. His most recent books are Well-being in Schools: Three Forces that Will Uplift Your Students in a Volatile World with Dennis Shirley, Five Paths of Student Engagement with Dennis Shirley, and Moving: A Memoir of Education and Social Mobility.

Andy Hargreaves on identity, influence and research in education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Alma Harris about leadership, networks, the teaching profession, and education policy. Alma is a Professor Emeritus at Swansea University, specialising in Education Policy and School Improvement. She has held Professorial posts at the University of Warwick, University College London, the University of Malaya, and the University of Bath. In 2009-2012, she was appointed to the Welsh Government as a senior policy adviser to assist with the process of system-wide reform. Since 2009, she has worked for the World Bank contributing to development and research programs aimed at supporting schools in challenging contexts in Russia. She is a Visiting Professor at the Moscow Higher School of Economics and the University of Southampton, and Past President of the International Congress for School Effectiveness and School Improvement. She is currently an international adviser to the First Minister of Scotland.

Alma Harris on education leadership, networks and policy

Summer spends her days championing teachers and positioning students as partners in learning. She is a key figure behind some of Australia’s most forward-thinking learning and innovation strategies for education systems including positioning students as decision makers in their learning with the Northern Territory Learning Commission, the NSW DOVES the NT Youth Voice Peak Group. She has delivered projects and professional development alongside teams including ACER, ACEL, CSE, The Global Education Taskforce on the UNSDGs, IDEO’s Teacher Guild, and Melbourne University, as well as extensive student voice consultation for governments including NT, SA and NSW.

Summer Howarth on designing learning, partnering with students, and trusting teachers

Deborah Netolicky talks with Chris Munro about coaching, mentoring and cultures of intentional professional conversation. Chris is an educator first and foremost, with extensive experience in supporting and leading the development of teachers and school leaders drawn from more than 30 years in schools in Australia and Scotland, in Initial Teacher Education, and as a coach and facilitator. Chris followed his passion by joining Growth Coaching International
(GCI) in 2017 and he now has the privilege of leading this world-class organisation as it works to fulfil its purpose: to enhance the quality of conversations in education communities so that learners, educators and leaders can thrive. Chris continues to coach education leaders and is involved in the design and delivery of coaching and mentoring
training courses and consultancy projects across Australia and internationally. He has a particular interest in the impact of coaching on school learning culture, regularly writes and speaks about coaching and mentoring in education, and presents at major conferences in the UK, Australia and the USA.

Chris Munro on coaching, culture and conversation

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Helen Kelly about educator wellbeing and burnout. Helen is a school wellbeing expert, author, consultant, speaker and researcher. She led international schools in Asia and Europe, until she retired from her work as a principal in 2020. She has been conducting research in the field of educator wellbeing for almost a decade. Prior to becoming an educator, she spent ten years as a lawyer in the field of workplace health and safety. Helen draws upon her knowledge of evidenced-based practices, her understanding of the needs of school communities and her legal background to deliver approaches that are strategic, effective and have long-term impact on individual wellbeing and school culture. Helen's first book ‘School Leaders Matter; Preventing Burnout, Managing Stress and Improving Wellbeing’ was published in 2023.

Helen Kelly on educator wellbeing and burnout

Deborah Netolicky talks with Kevin Richardson about the joys of principalship, school change, and engaging students as change makers in schools built for the future. Kevin has been a Principal at Immanuel College since 2002. Prior to this he helped established the internationally acclaimed Technology School of the Future and held senior executive positions in the WA, NSW, and SA Education Departments. Kevin is a highly versatile educator with leadership and management expertise across a broad range of domains including governance, education, technology, and consultancy; in private, public and not for profit sectors. Kevin has been a leader nation-wide with respect to changes in teaching and learning, particularly in the area of technology, learning environments and student advocacy. He is highly regarded for his work on futures-oriented thinking and its implications for leaders and schools. Recognition of his outstanding leadership has seen him receive the Australian Centenary Medal in 2001 for significant contribution to Education, a Presidential citation for National Leadership in Education from ACEL and the Mary McKillop medal (Eminent Educator of the Year) from the Australian College of Education. He has been awarded the John Laing Award for Exceptional Educational Leadership from the Australian Principals‘ Association.

Kevin Richardson on principalship and students as change makers

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Jim Knight about instructional coaching, trust, credibility, humility and mutually humanising conversations. Jim is Founder and Senior Partner of Instructional Coaching Group (ICG), a research associate at the University of Kansas Center for Research on Learning. He has spent more than two decades studying professional learning and instructional coaching. Jim earned his PhD in Education from the University of Kansas and has won several university teaching, innovation, and service awards. The pioneering work Jim and his colleagues have conducted has led to many innovations that are now central to professional development in schools. Lauren is currently Director of Curriculum at the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Pasi Sahlberg about reinventing schooling and from where we might draw our inspiration to make schooling better for students. Pasi is a Finnish educator and author whose work spans teaching, teacher education, policy making and advising schools and education system leaders around the world. He served as a senior education specialist at the World Bank in Washington DC, lead education specialist at the European Training Foundation in Italy, director general at the Finland’s Ministry of Education and Culture, and visiting professor of Practice at Harvard University. He is a recipient of a huge array of awards for his service to education and his educational writing. His most recent books include "Let the Children Play: How more play will save our schools and help children thrive", "Finnish Lessons 3.0: What Can the World Learn from Educational Change in Finland”, and "In Teachers We Trust: The Finnish way to world-class schools". Pasi is currently Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Melbourne, Australia.

Pasi Sahlberg on reinventing schooling

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Pat Thomson about school leadership and arts-rich education. Pat is a Professor of Education at the University of Nottingham; the University of South Australia, and Deakin University. She is on a number of editorial boards, is Convenor of the Centre for Research in Arts, Creativity and Literacy, and is author of the academic writing blog ‘patter’ which is archived by the British Library and followed by academics around the world. Prior to taking up her role as an academic in the UK, Pat was principal of Paralowie School for eleven years, deputy principal at The Parks, and founding Coordinator of Bowden Brompton Community School. She has represented Australian principals on national policy making bodies and at international conferences, and was President of the South Australian Secondary Principals Association. She is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Science and the Royal Society of Arts, and has won numerous awards, including a Public Service Medal, a Fulbright Scholarship, and the Garth Boomer Curriculum prize from the Australian Curriculum Studies Association.

Pat Thomson on school leadership and arts-rich education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Professor Rachel Lofthouse about mentoring and coaching in education. Rachel is Professor of Teacher Education in the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University, and the Director of CollectiveED: The Centre for Mentoring, Coaching and Professional Learning. She has been an educator for more than 30 years, including as a Geography teacher, a teacher educator, and a researcher. Her research focuses on professional learning, especially how teachers learn and how they can be supported to put that learning into practice. Rachel works with student teachers and their school-based mentors, teacher coaches, postgraduate students and school leaders as well as a range of educational practitioners, including those interested in community curriculum development and professional coaching for speech and language support in multicultural early years and primary settings. She encourages professionals to find practices through which they can build their workplace expertise while developing critical reflection and their ability to contribute to, and draw productively on, the knowledge base for teaching and learning. Rachel has published in peer-reviewed journals on the subjects of coaching and mentoring, the innovative use of video to support practice development, practitioner enquiry and professional learning.

Rachel Lofthouse on mentoring and coaching in education

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Jill Berry about leading in schools, including principalship and ‘making the leap’ to being a school head. Jill taught for thirty years in six different schools, both state and independent, and was a head for the last ten years of her time in schools. She has also taught at GCSE and A-Level in the evenings for several years. Since then, Jill completed a doctorate that explored the transition into headship, wrote a book about it, ‘Making The Leap: Moving from Deputy to Head’, and carried out an extensive range of leadership development work. She has also given a TEDx presentation on the subject ‘Take a Second Look: Bring Out the Best in Yourself and Others’, and has published three short novels.

Jill Berry on headship and leading in schools

Deborah Netolicky talks with Dr Simon Breakspear about implementing change in schools and education systems. Simon is a researcher, advisor and speaker on educational leadership, policy and change. He develops frameworks and tools that make evidence-based ideas actionable and easy to understand. Over the last decade his capability building work has given him the opportunity to work with over 100,000 educators across more than 10 countries. Simon is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the School of Education at UNSW. He serves as an advisor to the NSW Department of Education and sits on an expert steering committee for the Australia Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL). Simon began his work in education as a high school teacher.

Christine a Senior Lecturer in Educational Leadership, and postgraduate coordinator of the Master of Education Programs at the University of Sydney. Christine’s research is centred in the practices of educational leadership with a focus on leading pedagogy in schools and systems. Christine is passionate about supporting educators to connect theory, philosophy, and practice for purposeful leading in her teaching, research, and service to the education community. She works with school and system leaders at all levels on research and professional learning partnerships that seek to understand more about leading together. Christine brings almost 30 years of educational leadership and research experience in the government and the non-government sector in both Australia and the UK at early childhood, primary, secondary, and tertiary level to her work. She has over a decade of leadership experience in schools, and has held previous appointments as head of school, deputy head and director of curriculum.
